New 6 Dasher Shooters choice - Berger 105 or (new) 109 LR Hybrid

Hi,

I am building my first 6 Dasher. I would like to use Berger bullets and realize the 105 Hybrid has a history of great performance in this cartridge. I also know Berger has just released a new 6 mm the 109 Hybrid LR target.

I expect some will recommend trying them both as the barrel could like one better than the other. Rather than trying to develop loads for both should I just start with the 109. I saw video of Brian Litz indicating the 109 is a improved design of the 105.

(I know some will also recommend the low production custom bullets that are available. I really don't compete so that the additional cost and availability would translate into a practical decision for me.)

A)

B)

I am going to select A) or B)

Your barrel will let you know what it wants. Try some Roy Hunter 103A bullets. There’s not a super long waiting list for them. I never shot any of Barts bullets I’ve heard they’re good too. I was new to the 6 mm last year. I got on the waiting List for some vapor trails and was amazed how well they shot without much load development. Either of those Berger bullets may shoot just as good for you. Don’t get caught up in the hype of higher BC. Don’t overlook Berger’s 108 grain bullet either. The numbers for them or not as sexy as others but they just flat out shoot.

Since you don't compete, and/or not chasing records, I'll suggest using cheaper bullets all together.
With a capable rifle, there all capable of shooting well under 1/2-MOA.
Look for a good buy/sale on any of these: ELD, SMK, RDF, Scenar, VLD, Hyb, BT... buy a bunch and go have fun, is my advise.

Makes sense. thanks

Hi @Linko
What style of shooting are you intending to do? I have been using 105gr Hybrids for a while in F-Class (6 Creedmoor) but am keen to experiment with something with a little higher BC in an attempt to reduce wind movement [we predominantly shoot 900, 1000 yards at our range and we always have wind!]. The 105gr-ers are however fantastic and im sure you will like them. I will be relegating my stock of 105's to my (being built) PRS rifle in 6mmGT. I have started experimenting with 110 A-Tips but will also try some 109LRHybrids when I get around to getting some.

Am sure you will find both the 105 and the 109's great. Given you are not competing you also won't be needing to buy significant quantities so maybe the cost factor is not so much of an issue. I would start with the 109 (given they 'technically' have some improvements over the 105); then go from there.

I also was going to build a 6Dasher, but given the mag feeding required for PRS I went with the 6GT, looks very easy to get accurate.

Thanks for your input.

I did see that Jim Borden makes a dedicated 6 dasher mag fed action

Brownells has the 105 Hybrids on sale and there's an additional 10% off coupon code, I just ordered 1000

My Norma Dasher Likes 105HB ,but 103 Vaper Trails are one hole group (5) at 200 yds.
105 VLDS fly nice ?
Try a few different Bullets as State Your Barrel with Sound off Load and Clear.

Welcome to Dasher World :)

My suggestion shoot Bart's bullets.
I scored my buddy some 105 Infiniti's that he shoots in his dasher, I believe he set a new range and club record with them about 6 months ago.
I'm currently working with his 80gr avenger and his 68gr originals.
For the few dollars extra shoot a custom and enjoy life.

Barts has three 6 mm bullets to choose from: Hammer, Infinity and Gungnir

How do you choose?

I bought the last 2 boxes of 109 Bergers from an online supplier, These might end up being my favorite offering yet. The question is how Berger handles the lot to lot consistency. I was tuning this morning, with new lot Varget, and 32.4 was good enough to give me a 3 shot .090" 100 yard group. Took 3 powders tested 2, Pulldown 15 was close, but not as good as the Varget. Since the first purchase, I bought 5 100 count boxes, and this morning, after hitting the mother lode...lol, ordered a 500 count box from an online supplier. Testing in a 7.5 twist Krieger .236" bore HV with Harrells aluminum brake.

As @Mulligan stated call Bart, or shoot him a pm. He's more than willing to help out shooters.
I'm willing to bet you might be able to score some sample packs to test and see what's going to perform best for your application.

@tclaunch Sounds like a dasher or brx? Do you mind sharing what freebore your using and where the bullet sits in the case, in reference to the donut area? Thanks!

Its a .268" TAC40 chamber. I told tool maker I wanted to be between Dasher and BRDX. Reamer does not have enough freebore .140" so I throat it out another .040". Bearing surface of bullet takes up 50 to 60% of neck.
