new 6.5x47 need some advice

Hey guys,
Just got a GA Precision 6.5x47.

It's a single shot templar action, 24in bartlien barrel, manners stock. 1in8 twist.

I'm thinking I will start with some Lapua and Sierra 123's and some varget.

What primers are you guys using and anyone have any starting suggestions for a load? I know each rifle is different but just to get an ideal.

Also what did you guys use to check your OAL on your rounds.

I have the Hornady tool, however I don't seem where they offer a threaded piece of brass for 6.5x47.

Did you just drill and tap your own piece of brass?

I purchased one from here. If you will use the advertisement links to places like Sinclair and Midway on this site, the site will get credit for the advertisement that will help support this site. Look at it from this link but return to this site when you get ready to purchase and clink the add to get there to make the purchase.

Additionally, did you read the info available on this site on load information? Here is one link and there are others.

I have looked at Hodgdon, and IMR website and there is nothing on 6.5x47 and I have search around the forum and really can't find a good starting and ending point for RL15 or Varget can anyone help?

KT

Varget: good starting point is around 37.0-37.5 grains with a 123, work your way up.
RL-15: around 37.5-38.0 good starting point.

I tried both these powders in my particular 6.5X47L when I first got rifle in my hands but I have since switched to H4350 (Start point of around 40.0 with a 123) which is shooting lites out compared to the aforementioned 2 powders. But my buddies 6.5X47L loves Varget and he is up to 38.7 grains with his. Please start lo. Each barrel/combo is different. The node in both my friends rifle and mine is right around 2925-2950 fps, both of us are using 123 Sierra MK's.

Frank,
Thanks man, that gives me a good starting point to work from. I will work my way up and see what I get.
I picked up some RL 15 last night and I have some varget and H4350 at the house already.

I have some smk 123's and some Lapua 123's as well.

I will let you know what I find. Also thanks to snowpro 440 for the great chart he send me for bergers.

Mine is an Obermeyer 9.1twist cut @ 28". My reamer is less freebore than most @ .096IIRC. Only bullet I have shot is the 123Scenar. 38gr of RL 15 runs 3015fps for a 10 shot string with SD of 4. Probably a bit more accurate is 41.6gr of H4350 @ 2945 with SD of 8 IIRC. Loaded some with 41.6gr of RL 17 that ran 3104fps but groups were around 1" and SD's were in the teens. All loads were worked up to!!!

Edit to add that I have only used the CCI450 primers in either my 6x47L or 6.5x47L.

Yes, let us know what you come up with, and GO NAVY! ;)

I loaded both Rl 15 and H 4350 in mine and accuracy was similar, at midrange, when shooting palma distances the 4350 was clear winner. I shoot in Arizona and found that the RL 15 load was very temp sensitive, the 4350 for me was more stable even in mid summer shoots. If you live or shoot where it is very hot that might affect your ultimate choice as will the final target distances. others above have given good starting points, I used the 123s initially and then switched to the 140g bergers. That was a better long range bullet in my rifle at the time. I think most people, me included use either the russian or the federal match primers.

GO Navy! That's right 13 years now and still going!

I have a good stock pile of CCI 450's and some BR's. I have had a hard time finding Federal primers around here.

The only range I have here goes out to 300 yards. So unfortunitly that is as far as I can shoot. The only time I get to go farther is if one of my buddies gets me out to the blackwater range or if I go home to Missouri and visit mom and dad.

I have read several threads with 6.5x47 about RL 15. they all stated that it was temp sensitive. I guess that is something I need to watch.

Try looking at the Big stuff forum on this site, it has alot of load advice there. (You're posting in the wrong section)

I have found 40.6 gr of 4350 and berger 130vld's 20 thousand off with cci 450's to be a great combo
averaged 2904 fps with a 8.71 Standard Deviation

I have been searching a good bit thanks! The reason I posted in this one is because it (says 6.5x47 in the section title.)

Headed to the range tomorrow. I loaded up some different combo's, I will let you guys know what I find out.

KT

Went to the range today in the rain. I shot 50 rounds today. All shot at 100 yards.

All were SMK 123's, Lapua brass, cci 450's, in the lands.

Let me know what you think.

I went up to 36.5gr of varget. 35.5 was by far the best.

39gr H4350 seemed to shoot best. I went up to 40.5gr of H4350 should I try some higher loads? or stick with the 39?

If you want a good recipe for 6.5 x 47 successs, read on.

Currently on my 4th 6.5 x 47 barrel, all chambered by Greg Tannel. All shot like lasers up to 2500 rounds. All 8.5 twist 30" Krieger. All ~.120 freebore. All necks chambered .292 with loaded rounds measuring .2895 neck diameter. All 38.4 gr Varget. All 130 Berger VLD. All seated +.012 to +.016 into lands. All under 1/4 MOA dead wind....under 1.5" groups at 600y. Took high X count with it at last Florida Snobird Registered 600y including a 200-15 and 199-15.

Current barrel, #4, just today shot 1-5/16" group at 600y.

This cartridge has, for me, won several NRA registered 1000y meets, set/tied 7-8 NRA F-Open GS records the past 4-5 years and still holds 2 or 3 NRA records.

There's just nothing not to like about this mild recoiling cartridge.

KT, looking good on paper with your new stick! Looks like it will shoot everything good. Try inching up more with the H4350 from 40.5 in .3 increments until pressure signs show. Were you able to chrony any of the loads?
