Finally making the "OLD" wildcat a production gun. I knew I saved all that H-870 and H-5010 for a reason... Nah, I don't like belts ;)

Actually I believe it is the other way around. The 6.5-300 Weatherby was around in the early 60's. Alex Hoyer from Lewistown PA fooled around with it a long time ago. The 6.5-300 weatherby and the 7mm-300 Weatherby were early cartridges shot at the Pa 1000 Yard Club. Matt

Anyone using H870 better be prepared to do a lot of cleaning. One of the worst powders I've ever used. Tried it in the early 70's in a then wildcat .338-378. It was both inaccurate and dirty. Bill

I used it in the 6-284 and 30-416 Imp...Dirty yes, but it' did the job.

Richie Kepp won the aggregate with a 6.5x300 wby in 1969 (I think) and also it has the cool factor. If I ever have another long range rifle made it will be a 6.5x300 wby.

I believe some of the new powders would work great in that case. Back then they only had a few real slow powders and most were ball powders and real dirty. Matt

IIRC two gentlemen named Wright and Hoyer played with this chambering in the 1960's (as others here already mentioned). The idea was a 1K yard cartridge with less recoil than the 30 calibers. They used 139 grain bullets. Seems like I recall reading that the barrels barely survived load testing.

They would get between 500 and 1000 rounds out of a barrel before it wasn't competitive anymore. One thing they thought, was the faster the bullet got there the less wind drift it would have. That is not true because most of what we shoot now is 2800 to 3000. Back then they shot them up to 3300 with big loads of slow burning ball powders. Matt

Time of flight dictates deflection, velocity and .bc dictate time of flight, so I believe the faster a bullet gets there, the less it is influenced by the environment is correct???

I agree and have seen it countless times, the first time I realized it I was shooting 40gr Vmax's out of my 223 @ 3000 fps, with a steady wind and was hitting about a foot to the right of the target on the cardboard. I also happened to have my 220 swift with me loaded with the same 40gr Vmax's with a load that I had chrono'd @ over 4000 fps, and at the same target I was averaging less than 6" to the right of the target. So that 1000 fps made a big difference even with the same bullet in the same conditions. I have seen the same results every time all the way up to 30 caliber.

I have one now that I've been reloading for a buddy. It was his grandfathers. I'm using his original Norma 139 gr FMJ from the early 70's with Rotumbo. It's shows to be very accurate out of a 29 1/2" pencil barrel that's ported. That reminds me I need to finish since hunting season is just around the corner ! Thanks for the reminder !!

I think that the 6.5x300 wby was once considered one the best long range hunting cartridges among Pa. long range hunters.

Tom, I think my reply was accurate with the wording used, but thanks.
Curious, you stated "wind induced drift is more about .bc, but yes, lessening the time of flight does help"
How else are you going to reduce the environmental effect on a bullet other than reducing the time of flight?
