New .375 H&H

I acquired a new Remington 700 in .375 H&H that was built by a guy named Frank Wells out of AZ. My dad picked it up in an estate sale and didn't really need/want it so I got it from him. It has a Douglas sporter barrel, action was blue printed and trued by Frank Wells, polished factory trigger, McMillan Mtn. Rifle stock, and a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5x20. I am looking to do some reloading for it start with some 250gr. Game Kings but thought I would pull from the wisdom here first. If you have any load work that you'd be willing to share, please let me know. I have only loaded up to my 7mag so am not sure on the bigger caliber stuff. Thanks a ton!

Fred Wells was an amazing gunsmith. I have been to his shop his Mauser collection is supposedly one of the most complete collections in the world. I can honestly say you get chills when you go in his shop. Just curious about the stock. Do you know if the stock it has is original. Every gun he made in his shop has a wood stock not to say he didn't use others just curious. Fred has some amazing guns he was pretty innovative there is a gun he built in the early 60's it's a benchrest type stock but the barrel and action are mounted way to the rear like a current bull pup. It has one of the old Lyman type scopes on it. You have a piece of history there.

There is actually a Fred Wells (Whom you are talking about) and a Frank Wells who made this rifle. Fred was really well known for his Wooden mauser builds and Frank is much more well known for his big bore african classics (I believe they are related). I have seen one other made by Frank Wells with this same stock and was chambered in .375 Ruger. My father spoke with Frank about the gun last year and he gave him all the details on it.

Haha no worries! Frank Wells was actually the guy who created the .510wells cartridge in the 1954 and was used in some of Fred's guns as well.

I don't shoot the GK, but do load for and shoot the Barnes TTSX. Started with RL-15 and H4895. Ended up settling for NORMA 201. It offers the best accuracy, velocity and cleanliness.

I used H4831SC in mine for a trip to Africa in October with Nosler 260gr Partititons and Accubonds. I also loaded a bunch of reduced power loads for practice, I can't recall the powder off the top of my head, but the load is listed in the Sierra manual. I am a big fan of a cartridge that is over 100 years old and still does the job very well.

Do you want to sell that rifle? The .375 is about the best all around African rifle ever built if you only want to bring 1 rifle with you, and the Rem 700 action is very reliable. . Its the only caliber less than .400 allowed for dangerous game. I'd suggest 300 grain bullets though. Soft Points for Lion and Leopard and machined solids (not jacketed) for Elephant and Buffalo. I've hunted Africa more than 20 times and I like to bring 2 separate rifles. An 8mm Rem Mag (which is a necked down .375) with 225's for a light rifle and a .458 for a heavy rifle. That .375 splits them. I use the same stock as your rifle for my light rifle. I like it because it can handle the conditions better than wood. Nice rifle all around. Take care of it unless you want to sell it.

I bought a nice new M70 Super Express in .375 H&H back in '87 IIRC. Our club was running reduced HP silhouette matches for cast bullets only, I'd just finished reading John Taylor's "African Cartridges & Rifles", and had a bad case of the hots to own & shoot something similar to what Taylor wrote about. The 375 was by far the most practical chambering for someone like myself, who would probably never make an African safari, and would work well with cast bullets & reduced loads, or so I reasoned.

I bought a RCBS 37-250FN mould, cast bunches of bullets out of alloy I'd made up by adding 2% tin/6% antimony to wheel weights, and loaded them up with 42.5grs of H4895. The M70 shot this load very well, with mild recoil that was easy to handle over the course of shooting 40+rds in a match. The fact that we shot offhand also helped mitigate recoil, but still, the rifle was pleasant to shoot with these cast bullet loads; I probably ran over 1500rds of lead bullets through this rifle, compared to fewer than 20rds of full-power 270 & 300gr jacketed loads. Haven't shot it in years, but there's still a few boxes of cast bullet ammo sitting in the loading room, along with boxes & boxes of sized & lubed 37-250FN bullets - enough to last the rifle's next owner will into the future.

Have thought about selling this rifle a time or two, but never got serious about it, and still feel that way. It's got nice wood, a great trigger, is a good shooter, and reminds me of shooting matches with a few friends who're no longer with us - that makes it a 'keeper'.

I just acquired the rifle and haven't gotten to play with it much. Not super interested in selling her right now but if you had a real serious offer, PM me and I will talk with my father about it since I just got it from him. Thanks for all the info guys!
