New 190 gr 7mm Bergers in 284 Win

Has anyone started any load development with the new 190 grain 7mm Berger's in the 284 win? Been helping a friend and not real sure what speed to try to get out of these. I have been running the 184 F-class Berger's in another 284 Win which runs in the 2880 node. We are shooting the 190's out of a new 32" Bartlein barrel with 1:8 twist. Ladder testing took us up to 54.5 grains of 4831sc and 2760fps with one ragged hole at 100 yards. The problem is they don't seem very stable at 1000 yards. Any higher powder charge creates a little harder bolt opening. So I was wondering if we are trying to push these heavier bullets in the 284 win too fast. Maybe there is a slower node that would work better??? Any input?

Haven't seen a lot of info out there yet Tom. F-class John is running them in a 284 and I think he has a node around 2750fps - maybe try RL23 if 4831 isn't doing it at the longs. The 8 twist rate should be plenty even in the 2700fps range. You could consider a different primer...might help tighten the grouping.

Close. I’m finding my node at 2800. They’re shooting quote nicely. I’ve gone through about 500 so far. Only used RL16 in an 8.5. The box says 1:9 but I think that’s a pipe dream for the average guy.

So far I’m down to about 2.8” vertical at 1000 but should have that reduced a little more in the next few weeks.

What sort of powder charge do you need for that velocity John? Is 52gr close to the money and if so, how are the primer pockets holding up?

I haven’t even had to go that high. I’m a decent amount lower than that and zero issues with primer pockets so far. I pushed close to those charge weights when testing but found no advantage as speeds were getting close to 2840ish and the bullets weren’t liking that.

John, thank you for sharing that testing data. I have had 500 of the 190's waiting for me since the SWN's and I will start testing them this weekend in a straight .284. I'm going to start with N160 and RL-23 and work to RL-16 and H4350 if nothing earth shattering happens with one of the first two powders.

Hopefully RL23 does the trick for you.

So basically you've got the 190s moving at 2800fps out of a straight 284, no pressure and accuracy is looking promising...are you playing around with primers or primarily seating depth?

At this point I’m fairly confident I just have seating depth to finalize.

Went and did a quick seating depth test today. Not the best day condition wise but here’s the best group and it matches the test results for preferred depth I did a couple weeks ago. Overall I’ll tell you these prefer jumping just a little more than the 184s for me. YMMV
