New 1000yd Shooter ?

Ok im fairly new to shooting in general but a bunch of friends have talked me into my 1st 1000yd comp. My main question is what are the best/easiest scopes to use for a competition like this,magnification/fixed v.s. zoom etc.) my Rifle is a remington 700,.308). Also any personel suggestions for rounds?

Welcome to the game as far as scopes go buy all you can afford I would suggest 20 power or more for 1000yd work and for loads try the 155 Laupa Sceaners
Good Luck go out there and have some fun

I have a Remington 700P and it just loves SMK 175 grain bullets with 43.3 grains of VARGET. Seat the bullet out to be .020" off the rifling if you can, most Remingtons will nto allow you to seat this way due to the LONG throats), if not seat it to maximum magazine length and it will shoot just fine.

As far as a scope, try to shoot what you have and save money for ammo to learn the sport. I started with a Leupold 4.5x14 scope, then used a Weaver T-10 for a while, then a Super Sniper 10x, and now a Leupold 6.5x20 with mil-dots. All the scopes worked well for 1000 yards and 10 power is not a problem. Remember to get a 20 MOA base for your scope as you will need about 40 minutes of up elevation from a 100 yard zero if you shoot the 175 gr. SMK bullets.

Some factory guns just will not shoot the 155 grain bullets as the bearing surface of the bullet touching the rifling is really small.

Joker, the 12 X 42 NF is really nice for long distance. I have,2) of these NXS models with the DD reticle and I really enjoy them. Leupolds 8.5 X 25 Mk IV is jam up too. I think I would try to stay with the varible powers because when mirage gets heavy you can always reduce the power and shed some of the shutter and glaze. Hope this helps. Bill
