NEF Handi-Rifle

Here's an interesting story. I have a NEF Handi-Rifle SB2 that I use as a walk around varminter and it's on the second barrel. For $200, it can get scratched, abused, etc. and it's not a big deal. It helps to save my high end custom varmint rigs from getting beat up and I've dropped alot of PA groundhogs with it offhand shooting by walking along fencerows and treelines. My heavy barrelled varmint rigs are fine from a bipod but too heavy to shoot offhand. At any rate, it fills a niche in my battery. NEF recently installed a new 1-9" barrel and I've just started working up loads for the new barrel. I went to the range last week and had handloads for this rifle with bullets touching the lands and also handloads for a Mini-14 that have bullets seated to fit into the magazine of the Mini-14. Well, I shot the Handi Rifle first and the results looked promising. I changed my mind about shooting the rounds I had loaded for the Mini-14 and decided to shoot them in the Handi Rifle instead. These bullets were a full .103 from the lands in the Handi. Well, the first five shot group that I fired measured .151. I had those rounds loaded up in charge incremental by .3 grn. As I went up in charge, the groups opened a little but I've been able to come close to that first group on several repeat reloadings using that same charge and seating depth. Had I not shot the rounds destined for the Mini in the Handi, I would have never stumbled on the fact the rifle shoots that well with that much jump. I would have continued on with my original load touching the lands and gone from there, probably settling on something reasonably accurate for a $200 rifle. The point that I am trying to make is that I have been shooting and handloading for many years and have developed habits and a set method of experimenting; most of this has been done with custom benchrest quality rifles. Sometimes, the very methods used for custom rifles will keep you from looking any further. It certainly has opened my eyes with respect to factory rifles and I will not be afraid to try something radical with a factory rifle. Has anyone else experienced similar results?
