I just got my HOOVER pointing system and Meplat trimmer a short while ago. I love this thing. Easy, and does a great job. Wonder what kind of BC I'm ending up with. Mine is setup for the 105gr Berger Hybrids.

Barry,
Thank you for the incite, I also really like the looks of this one and if your only wanting it for a particular bullet it is cheaper then the Whidden, in the long run for all bullets the Whidden is cheaper but maybe the Hoover is a little more precise since it has different tipping punches for each bullet, I think the Whidden has three punches for whatever bullet you use, thanks again Barry I hope to hear more before I send in the order.

Wayne,
Your thought process was very similar to mine while making my decision. After receiving the Hoover I am reall y glad I made that decision.
Just out of curiousity,,, is Leo doing any work for you? :-)

I also have the Hoover trimmer and tipping die. Extremely high quality and easy to set up. The reason I went with the Hoover is the bullet specific dies that are offered. John usually has them all on stock and will ship out the same day you call.

I'm sure the Whidden die is just as high quality and produces similar results. I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but Benchsource makes tipping die as well.

Barry, what punch are you using for the Hybrids? I am using the same one I used to tip my 105 VLD's, which is B-12. I should order a B-2 and see if there is any difference in tip contour.

I'll try and take a couple pics of what the B-12 produces. The only reason I am using it is because I had it on hand, LOL

ridgeway,
I would like to see the pic for sure, well anyway you guy's have made up my mind for sure, I will order enough punches for 107 SMK's VLD's, and the new Hybrids and just go with the Hoover, thanks fella's,...Oh and by the way I did not know Bench Source made them, but I think this is the way to go,thanks.

Here is what my B-12 is doing...

$50 per pop is pretty expensive to experiment...that is why I did not buy another yet!

Wayne, I also use a Hoover, i can close the DTAC 115's. I use the trimmer, works good also, but get screw driver attachment, don't need the crank........jim

I have the Whidden die. I can't compare it to the Hoover (never seen one), but I like the results on 30 cal bullets (the only caliber I point).

The Whidden system is built around a Forster ultra seating die (I think) and John makes inserts that do the work. I have been able to over point a few just for practice, but all in all, it is pretty easy to get the right amount of squeeze. I'm comfortably able to reduce the meplat from ~.070" to ~.050" on Berger hybrids. I could get more, but I'm a firm believer in keeping the profile of the nose without any distortion (I think it creates a secondary shockwave and more drag than a bigger meplat).

Ballistically, I'm seeing indications at 600 yards that support the hypothesis that the improvement in BC is around 5%

I don't have any more unpointed bullets, nor access to a 1000 yard range for practice and testing, so I'll have to stick with 5% as my guess.

I think you will find that 5% is from a trimmed bullet and a 2% over the untrimmed one, still what i see most of all is they buck the wind better and of corse they fly a little flatter. The biggest thing is smaller groups and way less vertical. You will also find ES. is lower with the Dasher it dropped to single digits the lowest was 3. It does help but there are more pieces to the puzzle.........jim

Something to consider is that you have to buy the Hoover direct. You can get the Whidden from Midway and with their $25.00 off promo code (1212577 good thru 1/22/12 )the price is down to $226.48 complete for one caliber. Also if you go to Midway thru this website you help this website. Just something to consider especially if you are going to order bullets, cleaning supplies, etc. because then you save on shipping too.

Danny, Thank you for the reply, that would be a small savings for sure!
Okay bottom line which one does a better job tipping do you guy's think? Money wise Dreever is right, the Whidden wins out, right now I want to trim several different bullets in 6mm and .308 the Whidden with discount would be round numbers $385 for what I need to get started the Hoover $465 and if I started trimming in any other cal or bullet design price goes up!! I would save $80 going with the Whidden, I don't care about the $80 though I want down range results,...ie,...Which one would do the best job and last doing it, as usual thanks for the help.
Wayne.

I have both the Whidden and Hoover pointing die, the Hoover is borrowed so that I can test it against the Whidden, but work has held me up, sorry I can't help you on that one.

If you're going down the trimming route then I strongly urge you to get the Hoover trimmer, it is far superior and far far quicker. I can trim 100 bullets in a roughly 10 minutes, you most certainly won't be able to do that with the Whidden. The Hoover also allows you to use your calipers in it for measuring bearing surface.
