Need to harden a small part

Personally I would have it documented via precision measurements aka mechanical drawing while it’s still in one piece in case a replacement needs to be made in the future.

2nd maybe you could locate some Kasenit and case harden it, if not, someone may know of the current replacement treatment for the obsolete Kasenit.

If you have a hacksaw, propane torch, and some files, that part should take about a half hour to crank out, including heat treat.
If you only want one, getting it EDM'd and heat treated by a shop is going to hurt pretty bad.

You need to make it from a steel with a high tensile strength then have it nitrided for wearability.
Can you at least give some relative dimensions. ?

I just bought an unfired 357 IMI Timberwolf. Very cool little rifle but it has not been made for 35 years and parts are scarce. It has been reported that the weak spot is the extractor which can become 'loose from wear'. Not sure if it is a non-cleaning/lubrication problem or design flaw. The one part I cannot find is a spare extractor so I want to make mine last. The fact that this is the only part not avail at Numrich etc sort of tells me someting!

As it is reported that wear is the issue then I am thinking of treating the extractor and the bolt where it operates in with some kind of hardening process, either a treatment like DLC or classic hardening. But I dont know anything about this other than it is not as straight forward as it appears, and esp with small parts. Any suggestions appreciated! ( pic is a stock image. I haven't removed mine yet to inspect)

Looks like a stamped part with some rough milling or filing, look like it could be easily made, l have made many parts like that buy hand when l was in a shooting club before l retired, being a machinist. Now no machine shop.

He can make it for ya out of some Truck Leaf Spring or some Chromoly stock
and a Nicholson Double Cut while he is relaxing one night watching a movie
It may cost you $800, but it will be custom hand made and last for years.

If you locate it and want to part with it or some of it please keep me in mind. That stuff is great for improving the wear properties of low carbon steel.

The reported problem is not breaking but wear-slop. But yes ideally it would be nice to have a handful of spares! my problem is i have no idea what 'wire machines' are!! Will look them up. interested thx

I spoke to the king of the timberwolf kits guns yesterday. He was out of the old Sacramento Armory gun parts company and then formed his own which bought all the Timberwolf kits from Sac. I read on some forums that he had passed away and found an old 80's ad with a tel no. So I called, someone answered and I enquired about the estate of John Bush. The fellow replied " I am close to gettin there but I ain't dead yet" !! lol. He is in his 80's and said he still had a warehouse full of gun parts he was slowly liquidating!

He told me he sold the remaining Timberwolf kits to a part company in Colo springs but there are no more extractors. The action is a miniaturized 870 and some people modified 870/.410 extractors successfully. He said that IMI made top tier weapons and thought that somehow a reject batch of extractors got into the mix, possibly untreated or wrong grade of steel. It appears some problems occurred with the 44 mag version. A 1000 were imported in 44 mag and less than a 1000 parts kits were imported. Sac Armory only sold a dozen kit guns at a discount and it is possible the 44 mag's used up all the replacement extractors, or that the bad extractor batch went into the 44 mags. Unknown.

Nevertheless, thanks to a referral above I am going to have a few dozen made by Wire EDM and go from there.

Here are a few pics of the rifle. It is unique and has a heavy bbl and supposedly can shoot 1.5 moa at 100, which is crazy. The stock is adjustable vertically for irons to optics. Fit and finish is excellent and the trigger has no stack or slop. I got some target 357 box ammo and will put it on paper in a few days. Thanks for all advice. After I shoot it I will disassemble and post a pic of the khyber pass extractor. Can see it in last pic

ps: it will be my 'truck gun' cause I can hit threats better with a rifle than a handgun! (and any coyote dumb enough to get within 150 yds of my truck!)
