Need tangent ogive

Texas Solo

B.S. High Master
Hey all. I've decided to attempt a different bullet in .223 F/TR rifle. I have a Wylde chamber, 1/7, for use of heavier bullets. But when seating to .005" off the lands, I have very little bullet in the case with my Berger 80gr VLD. I thought about trying 90gr, but they're impossible to find and way to expensive. The VLD is obviously a secant ogive, so I'm thinking something with a tangent ogive would reach the lands earlier, thus leaving more bullet in the case. I'm I thinking straight?
Also, who makes such a bullet in 77, 80 or 90gr? Product descriptions leave a lot to be desired :(

I shoot 77 an 80 Sierra Matchkings in the 223 Wylde chamber and have no problem with the bullet being sufficiently in the case with the bullet near or touching the lands. I also shoot the Hornady 75 BTHP match bullets and the Hornady 75 A MAX in the 223 Wylde chamber with similar favorable results.

Now I'm really confused. The 80 SMK gives me less less bullet in the case than the 80VLD, and with the VLD I only have .256" in the case, minus the boat tail portion that doesn't touch the neck, = .086" actually contacting the neck.
My Hornady brass is not trimmed and stays at 1.760" (which leaves me a .030" gap, as measured, in which to build a carbon ring!)

How long is your brass after sizing?
maybe I just have a VERY long throat? (Shilen S.M. barrel)

My next barrel will definitely NOT be a Wylde chamber. I don't see any disadvantage in using a 77gr bullet, better seated in a .223 chamber, at 600yds.

I have a Shilen Select Match Wylde barrel (1/8) and I wish mine had a longer throat... With a 20 thousands hard jam I have what I would consider way too much bullet in the case. With a 20 thousand hard jam I have 0.451 in the case which less the boat tail means 0.260 bearing surface in the case. Did you recently get the barrel? Perhaps contact Shilen, sounds like a unusually long throat for a wylde, or perhaps I got one with an unusually short throat?

What col are you at?

When you had your chamber cut, did you specify what length of bullet you want.
My current chamber is a Wylde and I had it throated for my specific OAL. By doing this I have total control of the overall length

Cartridge OAL is 2.600, and that's at .005" off the lands.
Doing the math gets me this:

Cartridge OAL = 2.600 (CBTO = 2.100/ I load to 2.095)
Brass length - 1.760
------------------------------
exposed bullet = .840"

Nominal length of Berger 80gr = 1.088
minus exposed bullet - .8400
------------------------------------------
bullet in case neck .248"
minus boat tail - .177 (approx)
-------------------------------------------
bullet contact with neck .071"

So, how many of you only have .071" of bullet contacting the neck?

I did not have this luxury. I found the barrel in stock, so it was what it was.
