need some help

I shoot f class with my 308 and I do all my own loading. My problem is my 14 girl year would like to try it and I have a ruger 22-250 with a 1 in 14 and a 28 inch bull barrel could this work for a starter gun for 600 yard f class. If so any ideas where to start loads at.

hogden shows a 1:14 shooting up to a 70/77g bullet.don't know for myself.but FWIW I would put a 1:9 223 in her hands.with my 14 year old girl it would be the best thing to start with.but this is my opinion for my little girl.try some 60 -70 grain bullets and see what they do you might get one to shoot as good as you wanted it too.but hey these are just opinions and what I would try.hope things work out for yea.I just hope that both if not one of my girls wants to pick up what their daddy loves too do. Gunamonth is right. After having a half a dozen different 22-250s, both standard and AI, most 14 twist barrels, I can say that I've never had a 14tw stabilize anything over 55grns.

I too would consider a 9tw 223.

Cant wait until my daughter wants to shoot! Lucky guy!

use a 9 twist or lower and use the sierra 69 gr match king. They shoot phenomonly. The 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 will shoot the heavier bullets which have a better ballistic coefficient, she will probably out shoot her dad,LOL.

If she not a small framed child and it not a light weight rifle you might be get by with it nothing will turn a child off quicker then felt recoil. You'll be lucky if you can get it to stabilize 69grSMK's I also think she'd be much better served with a 8 or 9 twist .223. Buy the way there was a new Savage 223 LRPV and Savage F class for sale in the classified adds.

Even at .22-250 velocities, the bullets that the 1-14" twist rate will stabilise will be blown around a lot at 600yd, unless it's a very sheltered range. While that will teach your daughter a lot about wind-reading, it can be very discouraging for a beginner. I'd say fast (1-8") twist .223 Rem loaded with 80gn bullets any day for a youngster.

An alternative might be your .308W with a light load - something like the 175gn Sierra MK down at maybe 2,400 fps, or a 155 at 2,600-2,700 fps MV. If you make sure she is holding the rifle properly, recoil won't be a problem.

As I reported in another thread, my .220 Swift in a Rem 700 VSSF with a 14 twist barrel just barely stabilizes 55 gr Sierra BlitzKings. The plastic tip forces a bullet geometry that is too long for the 14 twist. I can put five 50 gr VMax into 1/2 inch at 100 but barely squeek an inch with the 55 VMax or BKing.

The Sierra manual says the 65 gr spbt needs a 10 twist or faster. This puts a long range competition bullet such as the 69 Match King right out of the picture with a 14 twist.

Seems strange that a dinky little cartridge like the .223 could outshoot a .22-250 at 600 yards but it is a matter of matching bullet weight to rifling twist to wind deflection. Velocity is a secondary consideration.

Find an 8 twist barrel and get that ruger shooting 80gr bullets. Sure its not a full on target action etc but its a start. If its not accurate enough, then you have a long range varmint gun
