Need some help with reloading 22BR

I bought a Shilen 22BR barrel for my Savage action. I got the .248 neck because I was told that I would not have to turn my necks that way. Well have the barrel, did a chamber cast and it is right on at .248. Bought some Redding dies and started resizing 6mmBR Norma brass down. Well they wouldn't chamber so I got to measuring and my dies were only taking the necks down to about .250. Shilen said they should be .244 or so.

Well I took a neck sizer and got a neck on down to .246. Chambers fine. Inserted a bullet and it was back up to .251. Too tight to be safe in my chamber. So this means I will have to turn my necks. So I tried one and to get it thin enough to chamber the necks now look very thin.

So I need to know:

1. What is the standard chamber diameter to where I would not have to turn brass. I want this for praire dog hunting so not trying to get benchrest results.

2.If it is .248 then I will need new dies and turn necks. If so what is the minimum thickness of a neck that will last?

3. If I need to go to a thicker chamber neck what should I have my neck opened to? My existing Redding dies will work for a chamber of approx. .252 or so.

Would really appreciate some quick responses as I have my Redding dies ready to ship back and may need to keep them and have the barrel changed.

Thanks,

Bill R.

wellll....most of the modern day "no turn" 22 BR's are .254" NK...that is what I wuld do...it is a shame that they used the wrong reamer on your chamber.....it is prolly an old style chamber...check the dims. at the .200 line also...if it is not around .470-.471 ...it culd pose a problem also..!!! ...you can use the Redding type S dies with the Lapua brass....I wuld ask Shilen to fix it...they told u it was gonna be a no turn...and it aint...they need to learn what works and what doesnt to prevent this from happenin again...Roger

I have a 22BR in a Rem. 40X. It has a .248 neck. First I use a Redding 22BR full lengh die, then I trim to lengh, mine is a 1.515. After that I neck turn it until the neck measures .0115 to .012 thou. I use a .244 bushing in a Redding neck die!
The loaded round measures .246. It shoots in the .2's
I just buy a neck turner and go with it, you will never regret the 22BR.

Expiper, thanks for the info. Just got off of the phone with Shilen and they are going to open it up to .253 which should work fine.
