Need some help with picking a scope please

Pretty familiar with all the ranges in Michigan. I see that the Howell Gun Club increased their 300 yard range to a 500 recently. Never shot at that range as I have my own 500 yard range. That's a great mid range to get some accuracy data from your rifle and learn the optic and drop data when starting out in the LR game. Unfortunately once you shoot that range for a while it becomes a close range shot like the 100 yards does. Not many ranges that go behind 600 in Michigan. MTC has a 1000 and it's a very nice range. Worth the couple hour trip for you for sure. As far as optics, there are a bunch but $500 won't get you in that great optic but a fairly decent one. Probably Vortex or Sightron may be the best option in your price range. You may have to add a couple hundred tho.

For 500 yds, why do you feel you need a 34mm tube?
I have a 30mm Bushnell Tactical Mildot and a Kahles 34mm
The 30mm Bushnell is such high Japan Quality it is not lacking behind the $2000 higher price tage of the Kahles
The Kahles just has much better ergo, user friendly features.
30mm is enough with quality glass for that range
Being open to a quality 30mm will open your options up more as well as fit your price budget better
--------------
Anyway
Sightron SIII
Japan Made!!!! Bushnell (Some newer Bushnells like the "Forge are not Japan"
I only trust Japan, even though some Phillipines scopes are .......decent (such as Burris)
Vintage Bausch Lomb (will be 1 inch tube but the glass is above Leupold/ Hubble telescope leftovers)
If interested in a 6-24x B&L let me know
---------------
I would highly look at/ look through a Nightforce SHV Scope
Very high quality glass for its money
---------------
The Arkens are decent, think of them as a test mule for the price range scope
They might break, they might not track well later but theyre cheap enough you can just buy another one 3or 4 years down the road if you want a test mule before soaking $3k or more into what you know you really want.
The Arken Glass is Nice though
-----------------
Primary Arms copes I have looked through and used are Great
-----------------
Tract Torric - Bad Ass & Schott Glass (Top Teir Euro) for half the price of Swarovski
-----------------
The more money you spend, the better the glass and the easier it is on the eyes, less eye fatigue, easier eye relief
Makes "Getting behind the scope" soooooo very nice" (A Kahles is like that, so easy to simply spot anything at any yardage even 2000 yds quickly, they are on par with Schmidt & Bender PM II)
Glass is graded just like diamonds at Debeers
Clarity, Quality, Contrast, Inclusions etc then priced accordingly for the teir of scope it is being used for
So you will not get a $500 1 Karat perfect diamond
Same as you will not get $3000 worth of glass for $500
How long you want the scope to last?
Brass internals vs Steel and tungsten?
Kahles = Steel & Tungsten, Lifetime
(Have you ever had a doorknob wear out and get loose internally?
Brass
-----------------
Lastly
Meopta Great Value and they grind their own glass
Tough choices man, its hard to select just one
Look through them in low light conditions at the yardage you will shoot
That will give you a definite answer
Thats what led me to get out of my $700 firm price trap for a scope and go all the way with a Kahles
I was comparing NF SHV, Steiner, Kahles and there was a definite big step up in difference.
However, the SHV is nice crisp and clear with good clarity and contrast.
----------------
It is a one time forever purchase, and once doing so, you will NOT regret letting go of your
hard earned long saved up cash if you shoot often at all, in trade for a lifetime of Dependable Joy.
(Forget warranties)
Instead, reframe your mentality to - Buy the scope that won't break to begin with - is my opinion.
Do not compare scopes inside the store, (The lights are catered to sell scopes, and even cheap $200 scopes look good inside the store with bright fluorescent blue spectrum lighting (like a POS BSA)
Avoid Nikon - No product support any longer
WOW thanks for such a great reply, lots of info. The main reason I wanted to use a 34 mm tube is that is the ring I have. Its a one piece really expensive was made by a company that is not in business anymore.

I think I will need to spend some real money a little down the road, I need to learn much more before I lay down 3000$ I ordered a cheap Sig scope just to see what a second focal plane scope will do for me.

Thank You!

Legend Precision may be worth a look also if your price range is solid. 34mm 4-24x50 scope with Japanese glass. Not much info but a buddy owns one and loves it. Think they are around $650. Under $400 for their LE discount.

What is MTC? I have been looking for places with longer ranges. I was told about Howell Gun Club from a guy I sold a Dillon trimmer to. Its such a nice place, they have really put a lot of work into it.

I think I will be buying a much better scope but not today. I need to learn a lot more before I invest. I am at the point in my life that I can buy pretty much anything I want. I am 67 came out of retirement 4 years ago when my Son died to help run one of my companies. I am still getting a paycheck, everything was ready to retire. House paid for no real bills except normal stuff. I could not get my social security until I was 67 an d8 months (CPA told me not to do it) now I have that income. Everything is ready for my Daughter and Grand Daughter to take over when I die. I told my Wife "I am going to blow my social security on toys" In just under a year she will start to get hers and I would like to see her enjoy it. So my budget a month is around 2500$ to play with. I can save up a month or so and get a really nice scope. I have 3 rifles I want to shoot at range so I may have to just move it from rifle to rifle. Its not that hard to mount it and sight it in. My doctor told me I needed to do something to reduce my stress. We sold our cabin upnorth because I just did not have the time to take care of it anymore (I help with my Grandson he is Autistic and I am trying to steer my Granddaughter as she starts her adult life (some days are better than others, she is now 20) and we will never "retire" but I dont work production anymore. So what I do for fun is rifle shooting, I stopped 100% when my Son died. He was 41 and died of a heart attack. Him and I used to shoot a lot of handguns, I am trying to get back into that but its still just not right without him. He never shot much in rifles and I prefer rifles over handguns. I have ordered a Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor just before Steve died, it came in and I took the bolt out and put it in the safe and just left the gun in the box. Only took it out about 1 year ago and started playing with it. I have the scope already I purchased it when I ordered the rifle. I do not hunt anymore in truth I have some back problems so walking a long way or standing a lot is a real problem for me. Hopefully in a year I will get my surgery and will be better so for now I am just tickled to shoot from the bench and at Howell Gun Club I can even drive down to the targets. It just could not get any better.

Thank You for your and everyone's help with educating me!

I use to shoot at Camp Grayling but there 1000 yard range is closed to the public and even members of the MRPA.

Thanks for the background....isn't aging fun?

The Swarovski Z6 5-30 scopes must not be selling because they are half price at $1700 @ Eurooptic. Since you aren't cranking turrets and maybe they have a reticle that works for you.

I had a 10-50x60 S3. Decent scope for the money. Wasn't crazy about that high of a power scope tho. I think a 4/5 to 20/25 is about right for LR. Even the lower side of ELR. You'll get more for your money also. 34mm tube isn't needed for 1000 yards. Doesn't offer extra light, only additional elevation.

I'll add on for the Sightron SIII 10-50X60.
I was using mine for short range Benchrest.
Seeing.224 holes beyond 200 yards was challenging for me before I got it.

For the record, I usually use it between 28-32 power due to mirage.
But on those clear days...

I picked mine up used on this forum for $750.
And I love it!

As with all my other Sightrons, fit and finish is pretty good.
There are better. There is definitely worse!
Glass is good and bright. Controls function smoothly, mine is 1/8 MOA.
Tracking is good.

Yeah, it's a fairly big scope, but it's a 10-50. Nothing says that you have to use it on 50 power.

I have used Sightron 10-50 x 60 SIII shooting F-Class out to 600 yards. I can see the x-hair and target dot on the black faced Target. I have shot very well with this scope at 600 yards. The 600 yard target has an 3" X ring and a 6" 10 ring. Using this scope has allowed me to shoot scores of high 595+ and 30+ X 's on the 600 yard F-class target. A score of 600 with 60-X's would be a perfect score. the Sightron SIII has a 30 MM tube.
