Need some help planning my next build

I have 2 6BR's and am thinking of building a 22 I am mainly a varmint hunter, but I get really excited over tiny little groups. since there aren't a lot of varmints in my area I do a lot of paper punching. I am thinking of 22PPC or 22BR I shoot paper at 100-200 yards and varmints mostly 300 yards or less. some factors are #1 Accuracy #2 accuracy. I don't want to neck turn I prefer something that doesn't take enormous additional bras prep. I will be shooting Varmint bullets. Velocity is a consideration because I want splat factor. Is it true that a custom 223 will shoot as well as a PPC or a BR? also How do I go about specing out a chamber neck diameters,etc? any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I will be building on a trued 700.

I would seriously consider the 22-250 or the 22-250AI. I have found it to be one of the most forgving cartrides I ever shot when it comes to accuracy.

If you love punching paper and your critter shots are under 300yds, I would strongly suggest a no turn .223 with a 12" twist.

Barrel life will be three weeks past forever.

If made with the same care as a bench rifle, they will shoot right along with them - then there is the fact that there is Lapua brass for the 223, right out of the box - there is no case forming, top of the line competition dies are available right off the shelf... and it will kill any varmint, including coyotes to 400+yds all day long.

Wow, there you go. That has not been my experience, but then you have a lot more experience at precision shooting than I do. I have a couple of 223s that took me a long time to get shooting great, and my one 22-250 shot fantastic right out of the box and continues to do so with a variety of loads. I guess I just got lucky.

22-250s can shoot well - but for his needs as he spelled them out, it is not the best choice.

I have found that when someone asks "What cartridge should I build, and here's my uses"... each answer winds up being "build what I have"... so ten guys answer, and the poster gets ten different suggestions.

Maybe, just maybe, consider what HE is looking for - he punches paper a lot, and he shoots close in varmints... and these uses are not the realm of the 22-250.

Yours may be accurate, and that's good - but given ANY level of building a rifle, for equal money in the action and barrel, the 223 will out shoot the 22-250 every time.

He is talking about building a rifle, not buying one off the rack at Wally World.

But I'm glad you like your 22-250!

hello no?fun.!!! ...you asked about freebore and neck dia....most people use around .020" to .040" FB wiht 55 and under bullets and if you choose a twist,like one in 8") that allows use of the bigger,70-80gr) bullets...then you might consider .060-.100 FB....and for the neck dia...to have a no turn ...seat a few bullets in the various brands,or one specific brand)of brass that you plan on using...and add .002"...to the biggest ...then if you must or want to turn you can give em a skim cut and still not be toooo loose....Talk to Kiff about these dims....he is the best in the business.....Roger

Thanks guys I appreciate all the thoughts even if they vary from the topic, they give me something to think about. I have 2 22-250's, 3 223's, 2 204's as mentioned 2 6BR's all in Varmint configurations. I have already culled the non shooters, and these all shoot consistently under 1/2" usually better. The 223's are the easiest to load for. the 22-250's are good consistent high power units. and the 204's are finicky but once you get a load worked up supper accurate. I prefer the 6BR to the 22-250 for less recoil fairly equal power and longer barrel life. I don't want another redundant gun because I already have lots of headaches keeping brass separate. I have lots of small stuff too, like Fireballs, 19's, 222's and Hornets. mainly what I am looking for is real world experience with 22PPC vs 22BR. Who is Kiff? Thanks again for all the input.

Consider the 220 Beggs. Basically a 220 Russian with very slight mod to the neck shoulder junction to lessen case growth. It will shoot with a 6PPC. I've witnessed it first-hand in Gene Begg's tunnel in Texas. With no-turn brass, the cartridge is capable of shooting low 1s. Neck-turning might help a little. Fun cartridge. Gene has all the details,dies, loads, reamers) worked out.

If you want to go a LOT faster and shoot heavy bullets, I would suggest 22 Dasher. But Gene is pushing 52-grainers 3650 fps with the 220 Russian.

The closest to a PPC that I have is a 22 Waldog and it is a pain in the rear to make cases for. I dearly love my 22BR for paper punching and ground squirrels. With good varmint bullets and benchmark it will easily shoot in the 2's with Lapua brass and not much prep work.

I like th Mod's recommendation as it uses the best quality brass and requires no initial case forming or neck turning. I would actually recommend the 220 russian just as it is, an extremely accurate cartridge.

and another thing....ahaha ...this thread has several questions and lots-0-answers...I have had a 22BR since the 70's ....used the old Remington Brass...Ugggggg....today all U gotta do is neck the 6mm brass down and go for it...BUTTTT ...be shure your reamer is for the new Lapua brass which is Norma BR specs..
here is a quote directly from my notes...
""A chamber cut for Lapua brass with a .254 neck works perfectly for a 'no turn' 22BR. For dies, I use a standard Redding #91316 full length die to size the Lapua cases to .22. This is a one time die..after I size the necks down on new brass, I don't ever use it again. For resizing fired cases, a Redding Type S full length bushing die #77316 works well and lets you full length size the cases and size the necks with a neck bushing. For a seater, I use a standard Wilson seater.""
The Freebore will be determined by your bullet/twist combo....it is as we talked earlier in this thread..
I have used the old GI 322..in yesteryear....today ...322-4895-Rx-15 -etc. all do great...and you will not have to change/modify the extractor or bolt face to get flawless cycling....Roger
