Need some help 6br longrange load

Hey Guys,

In two weeks i will take my 6br a day out for some longrange shooting.
Im going to shoot 600m - 1000m.

I want to try VV N150 behind the Lapua 6mm 105gr Scenar using Lapua 6mmbr brass and CCI Br4 primers

My Rifle is a Bat-mb 26" 6mmbr 1-8 twist.

Has anyone tryed this combination and what are some good loads for this?

Hey, Rigo. Best load with my 6br has been 28.6 gr Varget behind the 107 Sierra. MV at about 2750.
It holds just over 1250 fps at 1K and, even though it's not yet sub-sonic, at that velocity it doesn't buck the wind very well. I read a lot about competitions where they achieved 3000 fps but I could never get that deep. I'm not a "speed is everything" supporter anyway so it really didn't make that much difference to me and I don't like having to extract my fired brass with a jack hammer.

I use 30.1 gr of Varget behind a SMK 107, 28" barrel and have had no over pressure signs.

33.5gr RL17, CCI 450, Lapua brass. 2950fps in 30in bbl. Start 10% below and work up.

You might have better luck with Vihtavuori N-140 in that barrel. I've had good results in my 6mm BR Norma with N-140 but slightly better performance from IMR 4895 behind Berger 105 VLDH or 105 Hybrids. The N-140 produces good accuracy in my barrel but only when using lighter than maximum published loads with speeds of only around 2765 fps. I get 2901 fps with 30.18 gr of IMR 4895 which is a slightly warm load, but certainly not "hot" and I get accuracy equal to the Vihtavuori as well. Plus IMR 4895 is cheaper and available locally where I live.

I prefer Varget because it's a local Australian powder & easy to get, but I've had equal success with VV N540 with bullets in the 105-108 range.

I wondered where this suggestion came from so I did a little searching only to find this on our very favorite website:

105gr Scenar Lapua 30.5+ VV N150 CCI BR4 2950+ In a BAT action, Jackie Schmidt runs the Scenars close to 3K with N150. Super accurate in a .236-land Krieger. Work up carefully.

I know that I can't get that velocity from the current lot number I'm shooting which is why I am agreeing with Mozella regarding the use of VVN-140.

I just came back from a trip to Texas where I was able to shoot my 6br load and play with another powder. I found that RL-15 gave equal accuracy to Varget and greater velocity. My Varget 6br load was good for the 1moa VBR targets at Mexia, TX. Last week I shot some RL-15 behind 107gr SMK's and found a sweet spot at 2920 fps and an SD of 6 with accuracy equal to my Varget loads. More testing at my home range (200yds) will follow. I do have 2lbs of VV140 and will look at this powder also.

Based on the Vihtavuori Burn Rate Chart, and their Loading Data, it would seem the N140 would be a better choice. N140 is a touch slower than Varget. N150 is more like H4350, and perhaps a bit too slow. Vihtavuori also recommend N540 for a little more velocity, but a double base also may be harder on your barrel.
