Need some custom dies..reccomendations?

Hi guys,

I have a long saga of a screwed up rifle project..won't tire you with the details, but the bottom line is I have what was supposed to be 6.5x06 that was reamed too deeply. When fireforming the shoulder gets blown too far forward--so it's more like a 6.5 Gibbs. So I'm considering a few options. One of which is to send off some fireformed cases to have some custom dies made. Any reccomendations? I've read a little about CH4D, Warner and Carstensen. I was also thinking of just having the barrel taken off and turned down so that it would be back to 6.5x06 dimensions.....

Right the Wrong.

Have the barrel set back to the original dimensions desired. The individual who over reamed, should pay for the job, you offer, to a competent Smith.

There's a good selection here: http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/gunsmithing/gunsmiths/

Man would I love get the guy who built the rifle to pay for it...but when you get swindled by a former transmission mechanic who's doing time for dealing in Class II/III stuff without the right license....

I agree, rechamber the rifle. Don't waste your money on dies for the as-is scenario. Sounds like you would be throwing your money at junk.
Neil Jones dies are the best BY FAR that I have used. Expensive, but worth it.

You should be able to have a gunsmith turn the shoulder on your barrel so that it headspaces properly. Shouldn't be expensive. As for dies, I bought a set of CH 4d and like them alot. I Would definately recommend them. They're pretty affordable as well. Really nice dies.

I've never been one to advise against custom equipment, but I must join the others that say to fix the problem.I think you will be better off with the chamber cut correctly. Lightman

Thanks so much guys. I am having a 22-250 rebarreled as we speak, and if all goes well I'll make getting this bbl. turned down or replaced next on the list. To add insult to injury, the 'smith tried to flute the barrel (26", almost no taper) and butchered that (chatter marks and generally looks poorly machined) too, so I might just have to have a good 'smith inspect the bore, action (Sako L691) and Mcmillan stock to make sure they aren't screwed up beyond repair somehow. Nothing like a $2000 door stop! My initial fireforming loads (before I knew the chamber was off of course) were 3/4 MOA--so nothing special but considering how the neck would have been unsupported, it might actually have potential...
