Need new high quality case trimmer

I'm ready to upgrade my trimmer from a Redding 1200. Willing to spend between $200-$300. What would you advise in this range? I handload for 308, 223, and 270 WSM. I hear a lot about the Forster and the Redding 2400. Please what say you?
Thanks for any direction.

Wilson stainless micrometer trimmer with Sinclair stand. The Wilson unit is pretty much the defacto standard for precision trimming.

Another vote for the Giraud. If you can save up that little extra to go with the Giraud, you will be very happy. I consider it one of those 'best investments' in reloading gear.

Last night I trimmed 80 pieces of .308 brass in less than 20 minutes. Now that is much longer than most folks, but I hold a dial caliper in one hand and check the untrimmed length of the case first. This shows me how much I will be trimming. Once trimmed, I recheck with the caliper. Every case is perfectly trimmed and chamfered. There is a certain degree of 'feel' with the Giruard to get each piece trimmed to the exact specs you want. The Giraud indexes off the case shoulder.

Tip- If you are using a bushing die to size your brass, you know the bushing produces a very small 'false shoulder' and can cause a bit of stickiness in the case holder. If this happening, give Doug a call and he will open up the case holder slightly based on the couple of pieces of resized brass you send him. He did this for me.

I have the Redding 2400 and it is a good Trimmer. BUT, if I were to buy a new one, I'd being going up to a Wilson Stainless and even further up to a Giraud at the top of the list. I feel anything below the 2400 model is too unreliable in terms of consistency and you have to watch even the 2400 model because of the manner in which the base of the casing is held in place when it is trimmed. The Wilson and Giraud don't have that issue and are both very dependable. BTW way, the Redding 2400 is well below the $200 amount you gave and the performance shows. And think about it, you don't buy trimmers everyday so I'd go atfer the Cadillac if I were you.

I'm running both the Giraud and the LE Wilson. The LE Wilson trims with laser precision, but it's more work... plus chamfer and debur is on you.

The giraud will be a painful purchase, but you won't regret it later.

Is anyone driving the Wilson? If so, how?

I don't, I feel it does a much better job by hand then with power, that was my findings anyway, other opinions may vary of course. It doesn't take long to do 100 cases by hand and I rarely do more then that at a time anyway, for those that are into more brass at a time probably precision isn't there top priority anyway and a power trimmer would be there best bet.

I bought the power adapter from Sinclair a little rechargeable drill from Lowes (19.95). These minature drills run slow. No chuck, the shaft fits the wilson adapter and makes neat set-up. Speeds process up considerably.

I have no first-hand knowledge, but I recently read a review (I unfortunately didn't save it to Favorites) stating that the Little Crow WFT trimmer is a good one. Plus, it says right on the website that it is the "World's Finest Trimmer", which pretty much settles the issue. ;) If you buy the different sizes you need, you'd be in the ballpark of the price range you mentioned. It might be worth some research.

P.S. I purchased a Giraud and think it's a good one.

If I remember right there about $75 each at that price I would have about eleven thousand dollars invested :o if you only own a couple of guns I guess it would be okay.

I’ve driven the Wilson both by hand and also using the power adapter. If you plan on using the power adapter, make sure you chuck the adapter so that none of the stem is showing i.e. chuck it all the way up to the enlarged part that screws into the cutter. Do not use the speed chuck method or whatever they call it. The reason is that exposed stem will very easily bend and the whole thing will go out of wack and you will need to buy yet another one. You won't believe how soft that stem is and how quickly this happens.....

Thanks guys. Sounds like Wilson or Giraud from your experience. I think the Wilson looks best for my needs after your recommendations and my checking it out. I'm not a high volume loader. Shoot mostly for precision at medium range. With that in mind I plan to get my order in to Sinclair tomorrow morning. Thanks for steering me right.

I have a Wilson and like it very much. I obtain very consistant results however if you go this route make sure you get the Sinclair upgrades - handle and holder are a must - carbide cutter is a nice to have.

I have 2 graceys and love them. I also use a couple of wilsons with my own power adaptors made out of pre hardened 4140 and they work great for me.

i run the WFT trimmer by little crow gunworks, and like it alot, good value for money, (although i am only running 308 calibre)

Nice! Wonder why they don't use the right material to begin with? Do you know if the Sinclair adapter for the Wilson is any better?
