Need more pin fall

Used the cocking piece as is, believe it to be a PTG .030" shortened cocking piece. Replaced the f.p., with a PTG standard f.p. without the flutes. Lathe cut firing pin abutment back .035" along with some minor tweaking. Now have .245" pin fall, .058" pin protrusion. All thanks to the members who have helped me along the way on this project. I have learned something which is why I come to this web site. Works good now.
Thank you very much(you know who you are).
Based on the desired firing pin protrusion and total pin travel numbers I seen talked about I have added another measurement to the ones I've adjusted, and I've only done a couple.

I made sure there was at least .200" of pin fall before it contacted the primer.

Common way of improperly timing an action. Most likely just cut the cocking piece. A new one should fix it. But like Al said, pictures would help. Some Timney triggers also give up a lot of pin fall. Check out your spring too. Even though .210" is definitely not enough, I would still expect a bang.
i am trying to learn...what is the proper way of timing the action without modifying the cocking piece?

Generally, Remingtons come with adequate firing pin fall, which comes from a combination of the depth of the cocking cam cut, and some cock on close. Functionally this is not a problem, unless the user is looking for a smoother hand off to the trigger as the bolt is closed. This would be the case for competition shooting from a rest, where cock on close can disturb the rifle in the front bag as the bolt is manipulated, but if that is not what the rifle will be used for, then there is no problem, nothing to fix. The problem comes when someone who does not understand what the consequences of their modifications are, works on the action. Basically, if you want to eliminate cock on close, and have adequate pin fall, I believe that the cocking cam would have to be recut, and if that were done incorrectly, you would end up with a bigger problem than replacing a cocking piece. Feel free to correct me on any of this. I am always glad to learn.
