Need Input on 284 / 7mm Shehane

Contemplating a new any/any build, need info / opinions / experiences with this cartridge out to 1,000 yards in any discipline. I prefer sling & match sights currently but looking ahead.

For F-Open, 3 guys at Sac Valley, myself included are shooting the 284 Shehane for long range out to 1K, 2 guys are shooting 7 RSAUM, 1 guy shooting a 260AI, 1 or 2 guys shooting exclusively 6 Dasher. All of us have at least 1 mid-range setup in a 6BRX, 6BR, or 6 Dasher.

Almost all of us have won one of the local matches this year. What does this tell you? :P

That being said, to answer your question, the 284 Shehane is a great cartridge to 1K. It is easy to fireform and fireforming loads are accurate as well, it gets a little bit more velocity than the straight 284 or you can run similar 284 velocities but do it with less pressure and thus increasing brass life, and it is not that hard of a gun to handle from a recoil and shooting perspective. Then again, I am talking F-Class so 22 lb guns are what we get to shoot and all that weight helps manage the recoil. It is easy to tune and there is a lot of load data out there so finding a node should be easy. There are a couple good brass options now, Lapua with the 6.5x284 that you need to neck up, and Norma which bullets.com sells. Lots of bullet choices if you are partial to a particular manufacture: 168gr or 180gr hybrids, 177 or 189 Cauterucio, 180gr JLK, 175 or 180gr SMK, 180gr Scenar-L, etc. Typical powder is H4831SC, with some using H4350. FL bushing and Seater Dies are readily available from Whidden. 1:9 twist barrels has been the standard, although you can go a little faster.

Steve, if you had came to the big end of the line and surveyed the F class shooters this past week. Most of us are running the regular 284. We've found that the 7mm bullets like around 2850 velocity, which is easily achievable with the 284. A lot of the shehane shooters aren't loading them any faster. I used a 284 with 180 Scenar L bullets to take the F open state title yesterday.
