Need info / help

Looking to re barrel my rem 700 223. Thoughts on using the REMAGE barrel good idea or bad. Now for the question can a peson use a savage barrel and order a nut or.

Do it right and order a barrel and send to a good Smith.

There’s nothing at all wrong with using a barrel nut. Most of the time it’s folks who can chamber and thread their own barrels or those who make money chambering and threading barrels who say it’s a bad idea.

I just helped a friend assemble a Remington 700 based rifle using a Criterion barrel from Northland and its a shooter.

My last rifle was a small shank savage action that used a nutted premium barrel that was chambered and threaded by my gun smith with my reamer. The barrel doesn’t know or care that it’s attached with a nut. In the end the cost was about the same as a shouldered job but it did save me some time and hassle of shipping out the action and having to receive it back through an ffl.

I've used both Savage and Remington (remage) prefits in the past. Had very good luck with them. The only drawback would be if you want a 1.25 or larger diameter barrel.

As stated, the Savage barrel will not fit into the Rem 700 action.

But, using a remage barrel works great. Mine all shoot 1/2 MOA with cursory load develo pment [because 1/2 MOA is great for what I compete in].

You do need to get something to hold either the action or the barrel tight enough to be able to put 40 ft lbs on it; a go and no go gauges; a wrench to turn the nut; rosin.

I started out with an action vise from Northland Shooters Supply. It works fine, but I'm now using barrel vise jaws in a 4" bench vise.

Love mine

Shilen actually uses a larger diameter than tenon thread diameter (savage large shank nut is used) and then there is the Bug Nut system as well if you want larger diameter.
