need help with XP 100 barrel replacement

Have a xp 100 in .243. Orginally it was a 6X45,or 47) and rechamber to .243. It is a shilen barrel.
I am looking to buy an xp 100 used barrel in 6mm br. Can I just have the .243 screwed off and the 6mm br screwed on . . . or is there more to it? I'm thinking the stock could need altering being the new barrel is heavier at the muzzle. Anything else?
Your help would be appreciated.

The list of things that could go wrong is a long one. The trouble is you won't know which ones will go wrong until you try it. If the replacement barrel goes on perfectly, rush out and buy a lottery ticket.;)

Excess or too little headspace

Barrel tenon too long or too short

Barrel does not index

Bolt nose does not fit recess

Barrel thread too tight or too loose

Need more?

I guess it is not smart to buy the barrel. Can a gunsmith fix the problems if they turn up or would it be overwhelming and cost a fortune.

I f your replacement barrel is threaded and chambered it shouldn't cost very much to tweak the headspace for a perfect fit. This is done all the time.
Most smiths would charge about $50.00 for doing it....

I wouldn't do it for a set price, too many variables as Ray said. Can it be done, sure. Is it WORTH doing? I wouldn't spend the cash on a used barrel then pay to have it set up. If you do your own work, it's worth it. But not to pay for the service. Start with a new barrel and be happy.

Hi most can be fixed with a lathe if their is excess headspace you can take some off the shoulder to screw the barrel further if the bolt nose does not have enough clearence you can have it bored out to fit the trouble can come if the hgedspace is to tight there are 3 ways to fix it the first is not one i reccomend but some try to do it fit a shim between the barrel and recoil lug as i said i dont recomend a shim but you can make a spacer at least .100 thick as a washer then turn the shoulder back to fit on the barrel this is the only way i would shim it. the next way is to run the chamber reamer into tha barrel further but this will be a problem as you dont have the original reamer. the third option i believe is the best get a thicker recoil lug and fit it then turn the barrel shoulder to headspace the barrel correctly. There are ways around most things but make sure you know what you are doing and have headspace guages. Also what chamber is cut in it check if it is for Lapua cases or older Remington cases if the old owner has some cases you are on the right track and they can tell you what length to trim the rem cases as the old ones have a shorter length and rem cases are smaler in the base than Lapua. Also find out if you will need to neck size. if you have an old chaqmber that has a tight neck i would reccomend you have a gunsmith run a reamer into it and enlarge it for Lapua cases and a .271 to .272 neck so you dont have to neck turn

Is tha barrel shot out??? if not and it has over 53/4" tennin in front of the recoil lug have it rechambered to 6mmBR Norma to use Lapua cases. I have a Remington VLS that was a 243 and rechambered it to 6mmBR with a 271 neck for no neck turning
