Need help with Hornady comparator kit

I received the kit yesterday and I took pictures of the so call instructions. Here are the insert numbers I received, 3-24 ; 4-25, 6-27,8-30, 10-35, 11-37, 12-45, 5-26, 2-22, 13-42, 1-17, 14-20, 9-33, 7-28.
14 total. Now here is the insert that came.
As you see none of those numbers match any of the numbers on the inserts. What am I missing here?
Let’s say I want to use a 30-30 bullet what insert do I use.
or a 40 cal. Pistol bullet which insert? I am very confused and hope someone on here can explain this to me or a you tube video explaining. They show how to set it up on the calipers etc.but no mention of which insert to use. So that is my scenario. Please help and thank you ahead of time……Pete

8-30 for 30 caliber projectiles.

Labeling is insert number-caliber.
I ordered a set plus an extra 22 cal insert.
Ogive contact with a heavy 22 cal bullet (85.5 to 90) was at approximately 0.213".
I reamed the spare to about 0.217" for a 0.219" land.

The First Number is the the insert ID number second number is caliber.

5-26 = 26 Caliber .264

7-28 = 28 Caliber .284

1-17 = 17 Caliber .17

I understand a little. The package numbers do not match my inserts Numbers.

I know guys use these on rifle loads but what about my pistol of 40 cal. I keep getting different col numbers just using the caliber without the comparator.

So the closest insert for 40 cal. Would be the 11-37 insert or 13-42 insert?..

I don't see the need to check pistol bullets. Can't help with Hornady bullet comparitor -I use Sinclair's and they are simply stamped .22. .24, 26, 28, 30, etc.

At this point I just want to be safe and not have a bullet explode in my pistol because of the wrong head space

The critical length for pistol cartridges is OAL I believe. Not from base to ogive. In rifles distance to rifling is critical.

Straight wall rimmed pistol cartridges headspace on the rim (38 Spl, 357 Magnum, 44 Spl,, etc). Straight wall rimless pistol cartridges headspace on the mouth (9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, etc). I think I have that correct!
