Need help with 30 BR cases...........

Seems that I bought a rifle with a PPC bolt face. It's barreled in 30 BR. Where can I get the base of my cases rebated to PPC size. Unfortunately I do not have a lathe.

Hi Ron. Sorry to hear about your problem. Depending on the action, you can get a new bolt (expensive) or get that one opened up (not as expensive). Most of the .308-size custom bolts can be made to extract PPC cases so you then can rebarrel for either. Hopefully, if you've already made the decision to turn the brass, someone will have an answer for you.

Ron: Checkout www.djsbrass.com, an advertiser on this site. He does annealing, neck turning, & maybe can turn down your rims.

There's no need to open up your bolt face. A couple of years back I purchase a very nice used rifle with aHall M model action which had a ppc bolt face, it came with 103 pieces of rebated rim Lapua 6BR brass that had been fully prepped for the .30BR .330 nk barrel. Being I had also purchased a 2nd barrel from the seller that was chambered in 6ppc I didn't want to open the bolt face up. I've yet to screw on that 6 ppc barrel but the 30BR is very competitive and I'm not going to chance messing up a extremely great shooting rifle. I like you was looking for someone to turn down some brass. A fellow gun club member and smith said that he'd do it for me but informed I be better served by just purchase new Lapua 6.5 Grendel brass which has the same size bolt head as the ppc case (0.4449) and then just necking it up and turn the necks. That's what I did and I can't see any difference in my loads as both cases shoot to the exact same point of aim and I still get the same Lapua brass quality.

Ron,
Now you know the dilemma I was in when I wanted to buy your 6ppc and I couldn't get any sound advice at the time so I bought a different rifle as you know. I did find you can turn the bolt face for about $75, I also found it not hard at all to turn the rim down with my mini lathe, @ first I did the extractor groove separate from the rim but felt it to hard to keep uniform so I ground a custom tool that makes both cuts at once, it worked fine but I decided in the long run it would be best to turn the bolt face and be done with it. Best of luck Ron.
Wayne.

Edit,
If you have a M-16 or Sako style extractor you won't have any trouble turning the bolt face and still have it extract both cases fine.

I emailed BAT about my problem this morning. I'll let you know what they say.

I was looking at case diagrams too, and wondering the same things.

Maybe RJinTexas can respond to this.

How about some of the Smith's out there, any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the responses guys. Ron

I'm a little, OK maybe a lot, confused here. What I think I read is that you're forming 30 BR brass by expanding the necks and turning 6.5 Grendel brass. Then at some point you're gonna' fire these in a 30 BR chamber?

The dimensions of the BR and Grendel cases are considerably different in the body/sholder area, the Grendel being longer and skinnier than the BR. The body, just in front of the extractor groove, is about 28 thousandths smaller on the Grendel than the BR. The base to neck/shoulder junction length of the Grendel is 43 thousandths longer than the BR so I'm surprised you can get them to chamber.

FWIW the 30 Major (Mike Ezell's 30 Grendel but he can't call it a 30 Grendel because the Grendel name is trademarked) and the 30 Walker (same deal with the name) have been around for a number or years. I've heard or read several discussions about the pros and cons and how they compare to the 30 BR.

I'm not saying it can't be done or that you're not really doing it, I just must be missing something or my case diagrams are wrong. There are a number of guys I shoot with that have 30 BR brass turned so they can use a PPC bolt but that was no doubt before the Grendel existed. I believe Ron Hoehn did them but that may not be correct.

Ron,
I talked to someone at Bat, Jason I think anyhow $75 he quoted me as long as it has the Sako style extractor, if you give him the serial # he can trace where they sold it and probably which style extractor it has if you don't already know.
