need help with .223

I have a Remington 700 .223 that I have never been able to get to shoot. It has a 1 in 12 twist rate that had I known before I bought it I would not have because I see no purpose in the super light bullets. I want to know if you were going to re-barrel it on a budget which barrel would you buy? This is a bone stock Remington that I have tried every powder bullet combo imaginable but still will only shoot a minute at best.

Looking for something that will shoot the 50 to 77 grain bullets.

Thanks for your help

8 twist, Criterion remage barrel. Since ur on a budget have a smith remove the factory barrel and square the action, bolt face and lap the lugs and check the bolt timing. My Smith did all this and screwed on the new barrel and head spaced it for Cheap. E

Yup. An 8 twist would do it. On the cheap, you could do a Remage barrel with the nut. I just went with a 7, on a Tikka. For the "budget" fix, I'd just do the barrel and see how it does. Then I'd bed the action. Josh

DID YOU TRY ANY 8208 AND 53GR VMAX IF YOU DID AND IT WANT SHOOT THIS COMBO IT NEEDS A NEW BARREL :D:D:D

Another vote for Criterion!

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I am going to go that route. Tired of fooling with this one and it not responding to anything I run through it. It is either sell it or fix it. I am not going to have a rifle that I do not have confidence in and this one has been a pain since the first time I shot it.

Good isn't cheap, and cheap isn't good;)

Expensive isn't always good .:(
Good isn't always expensive.:)

I bought an old Swede M38 for $450. 6.5-55. It shoots a lot of 3/4" groups at 100 with my hand loads. I bought a Browning Varmint special for $850. .223. It won't shoot under an inch, no matter what I feed it. Just like the op.

I'll amend my post as I got lazy brain. I went with a seven twist so I could shoot heavier bullets. Berger adjusted thier data a while ago. Check it before you buy a barrel. A 7 might be better for you. Josh

Before I made a buy, I played with the Berger Bullet twist calculator, on thier website. The 80 grain pills were on the raggedy edge of stability, with an 8. I thought, someday I'd like to try the 90s so I went with a 7. Take a look. Josh

while I'm doing this I wonder if I should go ahead and look at .223AI. Just a thought no need to rush into it before I have weighed all my options.

Put a barrel on it .
Happy New Year. Larry

One last mention. A couple years ago, I bought a factory action that had two Krieger barrels fitted to it. 6br and 308 Palma chambers. The seller told me the action was untouched but the set up shot very well. I've been shooting the 6br since I got it. It does .3s and .4s at 100 yds. Sometimes I get better. Just saying. Josh

I have a Ruger American that didn't want to shoot. I installed one of those Excaliber barrels and I have to say it is fantastic. I first tried a Timney trigger, didn't really change much. Then I tried a Boyd's stock and bedded it...didn't really help much. Then I got the barrel and it changed everything for the better. I don't shoot heavy bullets though, the rifle had a 1 in 8 from Ruger, I got a 1 in 9 and I shoot Berger 64 grain Varmint bullets. I guess it depends on what bullet you intend to shoot. One thing I will say, I always believed that to shoot the heavy 77 grain plus bullets you would want a 1 in 7, that is what the Army uses. I do know that for certain you want the least twist that will stabilize the bullet you are trying to shoot...so the 1 in 8 might be better. Best thing to do is pick a given bullet, twist the rifle for it and don't try to shoot a wide variety of bullet weights. Good luck, 223's can be real picky.
