Need Help, ring on Brass - **Solved** See Pic on page 3

Over pressure loading with case stretch. That brass is toast.Screenshot_20180717-110524.jpg Screenshot_20180717-110444.jpg Note 160 gr is maxed out at 51.5 gr.

Unless i missed something?

i would say with a sticky bolt at primary extraction and a charge of 51.2 gr of 4350 you have a hot load. i would back off a bit and see what happens.

bright ring could very well be where the case has formed to the chamber wall during firing and did not spring back. could explain the sticky bolt and bright ring. as the case released from the chamber wall on extraction and rotation polished up that ring on the case wall. just my hypothesis.

First guess would be that the load is too hot. Is the OAL SAAMI or longer? Second guess would be a die or chamber defect. It's tough to tell just looking at the brass.

I'm with Butch on this one, "Wedding Ring" bur when the chamber was cut, and maybe the load is a little "hot"

The barrel is coming off tomorrow night to inspect. Just trying to get some direction on where to start looking. Chamber, headspace....

Does the ring show up after firing or after sizing? Looks to me to be right around the height a sizing die would stop. Too low on the case to be a separation ring (at least any that I've seen.) If it's a hot load, it may be that you're blowing the base out a tiny bit, and the sizing die won't reach that far down, so you get the ring.

The ring is there on some of the New once fired brass that have never run through the sizing die. Very light. Very noticeable on resized brass, 2nd firing. I'm using a Whidden FL die. Velocity is 2825 with this load I'm running.

With the new info, your load is probably too hot but there May be a burr in the chamber. With the rebated rims your case life will be zero.

Just load a starting load and shoot and see if it occurs with a low load.

Your chamber is also mildly too short this can also cause sticky bolt lift in some cases due to the rear of the chamber being too small. Tubbs 6X has ‘‘tis issue if you chamber by running in a 243 reamer short.

Start by verifying head space. I had a similar experience with a new chamber job. Head space was 7-8 thou long. Easy to check. If head space is good there is something else wrong with the chamber.

Get a borescope and look at your chamber, you may have a ring in the chamber from chips that hung up on the reamer.

I my experience with the 284 Winchester and a 180 gr bullet you are running pretty hot at that velocity.
OK, I didn't see any issue when working up with new brass until a lot closer inspection. With talking with others at my club I was right in the ball park as to what they were running too. My smith and I are going to pull the barrel tonight and inspect. If nothing looks unusual there I'll redo the load starting around 49 grains of 4350 and work up.
