I am currently researching and writing a book on the Remington 550 Series of rifles, gathering detailed data to ensure accuracy and completeness. I’m currently up to 179 entries, but need help on specific years, as I have been unable to locate rifles that were manufactured:
* 1943 through 1945 (So far, data collected indicates that no 550 rifles were produced during WWII)
* 1946
* 1947
* late 1958
* 1962
* 1964
* 1970 through 1971 (I don’t believe any have date codes from 1971, but some sources indicate there were rifles built)
If you would be willing to share the information listed there from your rifle in the comments, I would be most grateful. Your contribution will help ensure this critical part of firearms history is accurately documented.
If you would rather not go to my blog and want to contribute, I am asking for the following information:
1.) Model number (550, 550 1 (no dash), 550-I (undefined 1), 550-1, 550P, 550-1P, 550-G2):
2.) Date Code on left side of barrel, just forward of the receiver (e.g., R ZZ, B K, etc..):
3.) Pattern on the top of the receiver (Decorative Lines Only, Smooth (no lines), Smooth with Scope Mount Groves, Decorative Lines with Scope Mount Groves):
4.) Magazine Cartridge Opening (Oval Shaped, Cartridge Shaped, 22 Short Only Shape):
5.) Cartridge Deflector type (Early / Special, Post War Late version, or Missing):
6.) Number of Patents stated on top of barrel (2 or 3):
7.) Location of Cartridge Stamp S,L, LR (On side of barrel or directly under the model number):
8.) The serial number if stamped on the rear left of the receiver (e.g., 1300XXX):
9.) Front Sight type (early, Late, Ramp [for peep sight]):
10) City and State where the rifle is located:
To assist with this effort, I have created information tables on my Blog with accompanying pictures to help clarify the column description available at the following link:
