seat a bullet in an empty case so that the bullet is out as far as possible in the neck. Next place the dummy round in the rifle and carefully close the bolt, as the bullet touches the lands the bullet will work it’s way further into the neck, until your able to close the bolt. Next open the bolt gently and extract the round, measure the OAL and you now have the seating depth that allows the bullet to touch the lands.

what riverdog said,,but sometimes you might have to make a cut or two with a dremel tool on the neck,,relieves a lot of neck tension and makes it easier,,

Are you asking for this information to give to the reamer manufacturer? If so, load a dummy round and send it to them. Be aware of bullet length and where the base locates in the shell.

I think he just wants to know where the bullet hits the lands,,but different bullets hit different,,improvise and persevere,,

And remember .....this will be for that bullet touching the lands, even bullets from the same lot # can differ because of difference in base to ogive length.

If I'm reading this right, your auto correct interfered. Your wanting to magazine feed and figure out which freebore to ask for. You will need to decide which bullets that you would like to try shooting. Set up a dummy round with each bullet seated to fit your mag length. Take them to your smith so he can determine which freebore will best suit your bullet choices.

Ringostar you are correct (auto correct also) that is what I was asking. Have the bullets I like already.
Thanks

lol, the bullets you like may not be the bullets your rifle likes! With that mindset you may be limiting the accuracy of your rifle. I hope your able to achieve the desired result your looking for.

I have been reloading for many years for my hunting rifles as well as my and my wife’s custom bench rifles, I know every gun is different. Thanks though.

Finding the right length , seating the bullet and chambering it is the way to go but , seat the bullet long chamber , the bolt won't close and don't force close . Remove the dummy round and lower your seating die on that dummy round alittle at a time until it Chambers without any resistance ., That is zero headspace , on a auto you want .003 . This will give you the length of your chamber from the bolt face to your start .of the rifling for ogive setting . Remember that measurement for seating all your bullets.

There is a couple of ways to go about this.
One is to send a dummy round, set to the length you want it, to the reamer maker. JGS for sure has an optical comparator and I would think PT&G would too. With that and the dummy, they will make a reamer with the correct freebore.
With this method, you may want to set the bullet a little deeper in the dummy, as the freebore will lengthen a few thousands during break in.

Another method is if you or your smith have access to reamer that you know has a short freebore, give him 3 dummy rounds set correctly and he should be able to meet your requirements using a throating reamer.

I have had it done both ways.
