Need help - new shooter here sighting in

Hey all. New shooter here. And still learning some basic sighting in. Couple of questions. I have a Nikon p tactical .308 BDC 800 4x12x40 and recently downloaded the Nikon spot on app. Trying to sight in A 200 zero at a 100 yard range. When I put in my data and submit on the app it tells me to “set sights 2 inches high at 100 yards for a 200 yard zero”. This is where I get Confused. After making my adjustments do I put the crosshairs back on center Target or two inches high so I can zero out?
Also, if I have a 200 yard target and A 100 zero it says “set sights to shoot 4 inches low at 200 yards for a 100 yard zero”.
What does set sights high or low mean? Does that mean raise the barrel or lower the barrel? Is it opposite? Is everything above the crosshairs mean high and everything below mean low but you do the opposite?

so confused but enjoying shootign

Put your sights on the center of the target. When your impacts are two inches higher than your aiming point at 100 yds, then you will be zeroed at 200 yards. Let’s just focus on that question first.

The other thing is that it’s not possible to guess every question you will have before you go to the range to sight in your rifle. What you really need is to have a mentor go with you a few times and show you how things work. If you don’t know somebody that can help you out, then maybe someone from the forum that lives near Edmond Oklahoma will get in touch and help you out. We are always glad to have new members (Welcome!), and a lot of the members here are very willing to help new shooters.

6Shot gave you good advice. Now lets back up a bit. First shot at the range pick a stone, leaf whatever out on the bank, have some one watch it while you shoot at it. Now put your crosshairs back on your target and dial your crosshairs to the spot you hit on the bank. Your on paper with 1 wasted shot. I weekly see guys shoot many shots trying to get on paper, often after coming from the local gun shop who boresighted it.Hopefully you don't miss the bank with that first shot, lol.

Jeff has it. I remember decades ago shooting, clicking the scope, shooting again and clicking again until I got it right. If you see where your first shot landed, you can than go back to where you were aiming and Click to the point of impact and you are on in one shot. That is IF you did not someway pull your first shot and if you are shooting from a solid rest.

I got shown this the first time I went to the Original PA 1000 Yard Bench Rest shooting school. We shot at the berm behind the targets, (1,040 yards) and clicked to where the puffs were. Thanks Joe Salt and Andy M. .........

Carefully boresight your rifle at 25 yards. get it as close to perfect as you can. Place a large white sheet of paper at 100 yards with a large 'plus sign' (+) in the center. Make it large enough to easily see through your scope. From a very stable rest, lock your crosshairs on the plus sign taking care to be as perfectly aligned as possible. Carefully fire one shot. Assuming the shot hit the paper, now align the crosshairs on the plus sign as before and use sandbags or other way of bracing the rifle/scope to maintain that lock on the plus sign. Using your turret adjustments, adjust until the crosshairs are centered on the bullet hole. Now fire another shot with the crosshairs back on the plus sign. This shot should come very close to centering the cross. Make final tweaks and adjustments from this point. In the case you mention, perfect lateral and 2" high should put you very close at 200 yards. Again, you may need to refine the adjustments at the 200 yard mark.

Thank you. I just wanted to make sure I did put crosshairs back to center. And hit 2” high. Makes sense

Ha. Thanks. Yes I was on paper but the whole zeroing in at a farther than distance than the max target was confusing to me. Then the whole set sights higher or lower was my next confusing part. I wasn’t sure what higher or lower meant as if I was to aim higher or lower depending on target distance and zeroing.
I’ve attached a pic for an example.

Posting a pic to illustrate my question. Thank you all for the help on zeroing 200 at a 100 yard target. Now my question is when I was messing around with different distances and zeroes I would get suggestion like set sights high or low.
For example On picture set sights low 4 inches. Does this mean adjust clicks 4”low or just use the BDC to target? Or should I just forget the BDC yardages. Use my 200 zero and adjust from there. I do know once I’m zeroed in at say 200 and if I have a target at 100 or 300 or 400 or whatever I can just turn the turret to that number and then back to zero.

Thanks for the response but someone had responded to me on this thread with a video about understanding MOA as well as attached an illustration. How is it gone?
