NEED HELP from 6x47 Lapua shooters, sizing down from 6.5x47 (hard closing bolt)

Catshooter, the OP stated that it is difficult to close the bolt. I agree that a snug fit is desirable for fireforming cases, but a bolt that is difficult to close is not desirable.

He can sand down the shellholder until he gets a snug fit and then he can fireform the brass.

Difficult, does not have a value - if the bolt closes, it is fine. If he "sands" down a shell holder (how much??)... and pushes the shoulder back, when it does not need to be pushed back - it creates more problems, and does not solve the first one.

There is no problem with the shoulder - the shoulder is not even touching the chamber - it is a tiny place on the neck/shoulder junction.

Until the bolt closes with a snug but not difficult fit.

Kitty, kitty, kitty, you go as far as to contradict yourself to win an argument. Earlier you made a reference to false shoulders, and now you say that if he pushes the shoulder back too far it will create problems. How will it create problems when the neck is acting as the shoulder?

All he has to do is size the neck down until he gets a snug fit and fire it, it will not cause any issues even if shoulder is pushed back too far.

Cat, there is in no problems with the shoulder but he also hasn't even touched the shoulder yet with his dies... That would indicate that his dies are cut too long for his brass...ie he can shorten the shell holder slightly until he gets contact of the shoulder with the die. He doesn't have to push the shoulder back during his neck down process but it sounds like he needs to get closer to it for proper bolt closure.... He will have to reset his die anyways once the brass is formed...

There is more than one way to skin the cat......

WOW. What an overwhelming amount of responses!. I am just blown away with this forum. The same question was posted on another forum and had just 1 response. Thank you EVERYONE who replied and gave me an advise.

Here is what I am thinking now and learned from you guys:

Option 1: Make the shel holder smaller with sandpaper. This way it will size that last portion of the brass. This will give me no resistance on the bolt closure.

Option 2: Leave it the way it is, and fire it. This will make the brass fire form to my chamber an then just size the neck down with correct size bushing. I have a 6.5x47 Redding Type S Bushing sizing die, and will just purchase a bushing for it.

The problem is that I already loaded about 50 rounds and really don't feel like taking them apart. The action does close, but with some resistance. Its not a lot of resistance, but definitely not like any other of my bolt guns. It the same resistance as when the case is fired several times and did not get FL sized.

I will take some measurement of the case and post it next. Once again thank you to everyone who is trying to help me!!!

If it closes with not too much resistance, fire it. Make sure you keep your bolt lugs lubed so that you do not gall them.

After fireforming the brass, neck size for a couple of firings by backing out F/L bushing die until brass is snug in your chamber and then F/L size with .002" bump every time from there on.

One last thing, always make sure brass fits properly before charging and seating a bullet in it to avoid being in the situation you are in now.

Eric Eric Eric...

I did not contradict myself - you are mixing two different things, out of context.

Badd badd!

Here are the measurement:

CHAmber measured with hornady OAL tool and 105 hybrid WITH COMPARATOR - 2.050 and without 2.650

Loaded rounds are 2.035 with comparator.

Case length 1.847 (did not trim it, since its brand new 6.5x47 lapua brass) MAX Is 1.850 (sami)

Loaded 105 hybrid neck diameter is 2.695

Here is another picture to where its rubbing:

Here is a video I just made. Tell me what you guys think.

I didn't have permission to see the video. How far through the bolt turn does the resistance start? Is it stiff the whole way? Half way?

Resistance is just like what you are looking for. Make sure you keep your lugs lubricated. You'll be fine.

I'm at the range now and you guys were 100% correct. After I fired the round, it chambers perfectly. Will post target and velocity when I get home. The shoulder is perfectly straight now.
