Need feedback on custom project

For the past 2 months i have been doing my research on wich custom gun i to put together. It has become some kind of obsession. There are so many options out there that the possibilities are limitless.

After much reflection, I have come back to the basics.

1 What will i be using the rifle for?

70% shooting at the local 400 yard range. Because its close to home.
20% shooting at the farm where i can easily make myself a 600 and 1000 yard targets.
15% Actual goffer,Easily 200 rounds a day but not more than 3 days a year) and coyote hunting.
5% competing in local 300, 500 900 meter tactical style shooting competitions.,once every 2 months in calgary)

2What are my shooting conditions?

When i'm at the range I usually shoot prone or on the bench with a bipod.
When i'm in the field I Use an ATV to get around, park in the bush and call coyotes, or sit in the middle of a goffer town or drive along and shoot from the truck window.
Its always very windy. This is the prairies.
I enjoy using a Milliradian scope and shooting at unknown distances
I am looking for ultimate accuracy but not in a benchrest rifle.
I dont want a barrel burner caliber, I'm not made of money)
I want this rifle shooting well for at least a couple of years and then i will only replace the barrel.

3What kind of rifle am i interrested in?

Gunsmiths, Clay Spencer, my decision is final about that.

the rest is up for discussion. I have become very familiar with components
But I wish to hear your suggestions.

Some of my favorite components are as follows

Spencer barrel, Will discuss twist and lenght with Smith
kelby's grizzly II Action or Bat Or Surgeon single shot
Mcmillan tactical A-5 or some kind of thumbhole varminter with a slopped forend and a wide enough stock for benchrest or bipod shooting
Removable muzzle break, ON so I can see my hits in the field and OFF so i dont anoy the guy beside me at the range
6BR Caliber or 6BRX or 6dasher i have a lot of reloading equipment and enjoy reloading on winter nights. It relaxes me.
20moa scope base
The rest will be stock components supplied on "Spencers Virginia Hog rifle"
Weight shouldnt be more than 15 pounds

Finally, does it seem like i want it all? maybe but i am shure there is something out there i can live with.

For the experienced out there I am looking for your suggestions

I'm impressed. It's rare for someone to really give a long, hard, logical look at the ACTUAL use and ranges of the rifle before it gets built.

The tactical requirement does dictate a different style of stock. BUT, some people love the A5, some don't. Personally, I don't like the hand position so much and I don't like the hand notch in the buttstock.

You should look at some of the prone style stocks Robertson Composites makes. Also, take a look at Richard's Custom Rifles' Model 4 Thumbhole Varminter, and the new Model 11,Similar, but with a Monte Carlo comb).

As for the cartridge. I suggest you wait 'til we finish Jackie Schmidt's rail gun test. It looks like we can get 2980 with xlnt accuracy from a STANDARD case, using RL15. If that holds, it reduces the advantage of going with a BRX or DASHER. Buy a Harrell's FL bushing die, a Wilson inline seater, and you're good to go.

Re the 20MOA scope base, if you use the Burris Signature rings, you won't need it.

varmint shooter need a lot of ready to shoot rounds so no forming round is far better

long range tactical request a reapeter action an easy feeding cartridge so short fat reduce body taper is no the best

for tactical match I will go with a plain 260 REM loaded with 142 grain SMK

for varmint I will switch for 108 gr bullet, high BC High velocity )

single shot stiff action when they are available in reapeter as Surgeon are far stiff enought to shoot straight

to save money, or not burn match barrel ) you plan to use a good BR quality mde action so switch barrel is away to :
use a reguler quality barrel, as a good Douglas or Shilen) for Varmint
and
a top quality, any maker ) for pure accurcay shooting

just need to request matched chamber and you can use your case /loaded round in any barrel you want

good shooting

Well, considering all you had mentioned on the style shotting you will be doing 2 chamberings come to mind a 6 BR or a 308 Either one of these rnds will get you plenty of shots down the tube before having to replace it. I wouldn't recommend the Dasher or BRX due to the fact of fire forming and the type shooting you have listed. The 6 BR I would do a 9 Twist and utilize the BIB 95 and or 108 or the berger 95 VLD for the longer ranges, and still have enough to use an 70-80 grn match FB and varmint style bullet for in the field and local shoots.
The 308 do an 11 Twist and you will be able to use a 175 grn match for long range and any light bullet for the short stuff including varmint hunting and local shoots.

I'm narrowing down the decision

2 completely different rifles but both would suit my needs, I think.

Surgeon tactical action
308 cal. 1 in 11 twist
mcmillan A-5 stock
I like the fact that i can also hunt bigger game

OR

Kelby Grizzy II Action
Richard's #4 thumbhole varmint stock
6Br Spencer Barrel, 1 in 8 twist ot 1 in 9 twist for the long ranges

Wouldn't the 6 br have the slight accuracy edge though?

Re inherent accuracy of 6BR vs. .308. They are both very accurate rounds. Our test with Jackie Schmidt's rail gun show the 6BR can hold .2 moa out to 300 yards.

A .308 might do that but you've got tons more recoil. A Palma master might pull it off, but the average shooter will find it easier with the lighter recoiling 6BR.

If the .308 had an accuracy advantage we'd see more people using them in 300m and 600-yard competition. They don't. However you can shoot a .308 in F-TR competition. 6BR would compete in F-Open vs. 6.5-284s and the like.

You really should hook up with some guys and shoot both cartridges. The recoil is much greater with the .308:

Note, with the right-sized receiver, you can just get two barrels and shoot both cartrides. They share the same bolt face dimension.
