Need chambering expert

I think Dave is saying leave the lathe running during extraction. I agree with that. I know there is a hight profile "guru" that states differently and I am not trying to start an argument. Consider this my humble opinion.

I have never seen work hardening in 416.
Just an educated guess here. You leave the reamer in contact with the steel until the lathe stops. That can't be good on the cutting edge. How bad will vary reamer to reamer and manufacturer to manufacture. Some reamers, for lack of a better term, fit tight and want to stick. My experience with this manufacturer points to a problem with the reamer.
In my case, same reamer did not do this in all barrels, but only a few and that seems to no longer be happening now. I'm not the only one that saw this, as I had other smiths ask me if I had seen it, during that same time frame. If the same reamer does not present this issue in all barrels, I'm inclined to think that leaves two things, setup and/or bbl steel...all else being equal. That said, I can't disagree that a very slight change in reamer relief angle may well prevent the issue in more or all barrel steels.

The good thing is, I haven't seen this in a few years now. Again, same reamer, same setup, but different barrels. Oh, another important point that I left out is, it happened with different reamers as well.

I do back off on the tailstock, prior to lathe shut down anywhere from .030- .050". But the reamer sticks in the chamber. The Mystic Metal Mover seemed to help with this in the last little bit.

I'm going to try and put this in as diplomatic terms as possible: You have a crap reamer which was ground with no clearance. Alternatively, you have a crap reamer which was ground with margins which are too narrow and the edge broke down. Option 3 is, you have a crap reamer which was improperly heat treated and won't hold an edge. I have had all three of these on reamers from this particular manufacturer.
Scenarios No.1 or No.2 are the most likely and can be corrected by stoning the reamer if you are comfortable doing that. If you set the reamer up between centers, you can usually measure the lack of clearance. WH

I like it too! Got done with ream job. Called manufacturer, talked with nice girl, said inspector is not in today, left voicemail, he is to call me tomorrow. Also got a 257 Weatherby Magnum, that was not much different, will inquire about that one too.

Well I got the two reamers back. one was the 270 AI, the other one was a 257 Weatherby Magnum which was causing the same problem of sticking in the chamber. Got a bill from them with a $0.00 balance due.
No explanation of any kind. Even asked for some kind of explanation of what they did or didn't do after I got notification of bill by email, nothing so far.
I do suspect I got two different reamers. As the bushing pilot screws were lose(sent them in tight), and I marked the 270AI with a red felt marker, returned reamer was clean. The cutting surfaces seem to be more pronounce, but I can't say for sure. Will be cutting a chamber with the 257 Weatherby, here in the next month.
Like I say "same thing only different".

Barrel makers were lost in the wilderness for many many years after Crucible closed it doors. There is good steel out there now. Whether all the barrel makers use it I can't say. Probably some don't.

Bought a barrel not long after Crucible went out and it cut like warm butter with some hard spots, we knew it was a problem from the beginning. The barrel shot great but shit the bed at 600 rounds. I asked the barrel maker whats going on with your steel? He advised nothing that I know of why? I said just curious I notice your advertisement used to say made from the 'finest 416R Crucible steel', now it says made from the finest 416R steel. Last barrel I bought from them they can go bullshit someone else.

What barrel maker do you use that has Crucible steel?

I've been fortunate, most have been very good or great, I think they all go through issues at some point, suppliers, growing pains etc. I guess to answer your question some things area beyond my control, I trust my smith and go with what he feels are consistent at the time and don't worry about it.
