Need Advise on Dillon Or Any Loader For 5.56/308 cases.

Needing to purchase a Dillon 550B or 650 loader?

Witch is stronger built?

My old 550 has to much slack in it when useing it on 308's.

Would consider spending $600 for another brand loader ,but already own most of what I will need from my old 550.

Will need enough volume loads in order to keep 4 teams shooting at our club.

Does Dillion or any one offer a one shot trimming chaffer/deburing tool for inside/outside one stroke trim/deburing?

Does Dillon Case feeder work smoothly and trouble free?

Does Dillon bullet feeder and primer feed save time?

My thought keeps going back to sizeing, reaming crimped pockets, flash holes,champering/deburring,trim cases to lengh, when useing flat base bullets......It's seems that this needs to be a separate operation?Only then will a powder/bullet seater progresive tool be needed?

Giraud is certainly sounding appropriate for your needs. The dillon trimmer doesn't chamfer/debur. The 550b is plenty for a 308 loader.

Since you have to trim after resize anyway... I resize 308 on a single stage.

Send your 550 back to dillion for a check up. My father purchased his at a yard sale and it was missing parts and had broken parts as well. Sent it in and dillion rebuilt it to like new I think we paid for shipping to them. We used it for 45LC for sass but I am planning on doing my 223 on it when I get him a new press this year.

I do all brass prep and then use a Dillon 550 to prime, charge, charge check, and seat the bullet. This is with 223 and 308. I also use a powder that meters easy, like W 748. This is my production rifle ammo.

I own two 550s and two 1050s. If I had it all to do over I would buy a pair of 650s. Just for the extra station. I load match grade ammo using Whidden free floating tool heads, RCBS Chargemaster 1500 powder measure, and Redding dies. I use the progressive loader like a turrent loader not a progressive.

Looks like this will save 2 steps so ordered to try out......

Forster Products’ 3-in-1 Case Mouth Cutter is the first carbide case trimmer accessory that performs three functions simultaneously.

In one simple step, this product:

• Trims the case to length
• Chamfers the inside case mouth to an angle of 14°
• Chamfers the outside case mouth to an angle of 30°

To further save you time, the 3-in-1 Case Mouth Cutter is the first cutter to employ high-quality blades made from US-manufactured carbide steel. They should never need sharpening if used exclusively on brass cases. The carbide cutter blades are factory adjusted on the blade holder to ensure precise cutting. Only Forster Products offers carbide blades - you won’t find them anywhere else. Five caliber choices are available (224, 243, 264, 284, 308) with more to come.

The Giraud has this thing beat hands down. I can do 500 cases in under an hour and they're ready to go.

I used to reload all of my rifle cartridges with a Herter's single stage. Adjusting the dies from one process to the next always took a little time. I now use my old 550 as a single stage press for more precise reloading. I can adjust all my dies appropriately in the tool head and change to the correct tool head for whichever cartridge that I am trying to load. I decap and resize (neck only or full length depending on the die in the tool head) at station 1 and pull the case at station 2 (just remove the brass pin). I then put the cases into a loading block, check over the case, perform whatever operations on the case that I want, prime with a hand primer and charge each case. After all the cases are primed and charged, I then insert them at station 2 and rotate them into station 3 for bullet insertion/seating. I do not use station 4 for anything since I do not crimp any of my rifle reloads. Commonly, the tool head only has a die at station 1 and at station 3 since I am not wanting anything to happen at station 2 or station 4. I don't compete in tournaments but I am happy with the quality of loads that I receive loading in this fashion.

If I am loading hunting or plinking rounds, then I use the 550 as a progressive press with powder that meters well in the Dillon powder measure (not stick; stick powders get thrown in a Redding powder measure and trickled up to charge). This process works for me.

Send your Dillon back. They rebuilt mine to new condition, new ram, frame extras all for a 68.00 service fee which includes return mail. I also sent in my powder measure, my primer feed et all. Just make sure to put a note in thebox with the items shipped. I did not and they had to send me a new large primer feed. But the press is wonderfully done up looks like new, operates like new.

Nothing like having that Halloween spirit with old threads! But sometimes it is better than starting a new one!
