need advice, stolle panda bolt issue

Im after some advice in regards to my panda bolt. Today was the first time i fired this rifle since buying it 2nd hand. The issue is when extracting the spent case 9/10 times it will not eject the case but leave it sitting just before the ejection port. I noticed that the ejection pin is very easy to depress with my finger something i cant do on my hunting rifle bolts.
Any adivce as to what the cause of the extraction/ejection problem is?
Im In australia so sending it back to Kelby's is not an option.

Possibly the spring for the ejector has some length removed to prevent the shell from flying out. Or to reduce pressure on the case so it's lined up in the chamber with no resistance. That's a benchresters technique. A lot of benchrest shooters liked to pick case out of the port so they don't loose their cases.
Best bet is to contact Kelbly and ask for a new spring or find a longer spring. Or just pick case out and load another.

If you have an ejector pin that is through the lug, it is a static ejector. (Known as the TG ejector) The faster you bring the bolt to the rear, the more forcefully the empty case is ejected. If that isn't the issue, then the pin on the bolt release that activates the ejector has been damaged, and you will need to have it repaired.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Hey Mick where abouts are you? If your in Perth or around take it to Dave Kerr and he can check it out but I was going to say what Lloyd said as mine does the same if you dont pull it back fast and hard enough, took me a while to get used to it but its awesome once you are used to it

mich,,,,first of all what cal are you shooting (PPC-??) does your bolt have a .308 boldface (universal //works with PPC and .308/BR stuff..??),,,,is it cone face or flat,,,why dont you post a pic of it to avoid speculation,,,,it prolly need a new/different length/strength spring,,,,,it is one of those things you just need to tinker with,,,Roger

Sydney mate, If its a simple fix id like to try and do it my self rather than take it to a gunsmith.

I was thinking that because the ejector pin is very easily pushed in with my finger.

6PPC mate, and cone face. Is the spring something special or will any spring that fits the slot work?

The ejector pin sits in the same spot as my hunting rifles, half in lug half in bolt face, if that makes sense. I think during the day i did try to eject it faster with varying results. Some ejected some still sat just out of the chamber.

Hi mich,,any spring of the correct size (dia.) will work,,,the tension and lenght are what makes it work or not,,,when you remove the existing spring use it as a guage when cutting the new spring a little longer (you can always shorten it ,haha),,,,once you get it right it will be good for the life of the gun,,,Roger
PS,,,when you mention the ejector pin being half in the lug and half in BF some are confusing this with the modern day TG (static) ejector ,,,,over the years the M1 spring loaded plunger type of ejector has been positioned at various locations "around the clock" in the bolt face,,,,some favor a location that keeps the case neck up and in the corner of the bolt raceway during extracton/ejection ,,,,that is why I asked for a pic,,,and if the BF is ppc or .308...you will get it working perfectly with a little experimenting,,,

Cheers mate, i'll pull it apart on the weekend and see what sort of spring i need. Posting pics here is a weird setup that i dont understand how to do.

Try the spring from an ink pen. Most are the right diameter and once cut to length, are about right for tension. This is a common trick.

Oh, and as Eddie mentioned, the bolt face, if it's a 308 bf and you're shooting a ppc based cartridge, it may take some tinkering to make it eject reliably.

Kelbly's is very good to work with. I understand the distance but you might find getting the correct spring from Kelbly's is the fastest and least expensive option. While you are at it you might consider a new firing pin spring too.

Yeah, I'd second calling Kelblys, they are really easy to work with, I know they have done some modifications on the ejector plug to help with some cases, give them a call and more than likely they will be able to get your issue sorted out in a phone call.

Also, yeah, a new firing pin spring is under $20 and there's really no reason to not put a new one in a 2nd hand rifle. Pandas are great actions that last forever, one of the really nice features is to be able to call pretty much any benchrest gunsmith to chamber up a barrel for then and they can do it without having the action on hand, a Panda cone bolt tenon from the 90s is the same as one today and the barrels are interchangeable.

Im pretty sure it a 6PPC bolt, i know the gunsmith who built the rifle and he would of had to have ordered the action from Kelbys, so he would have ordered a 6PPC bolt action. But i'll pull the spring out on the weekend and compare it with an ink pen spring. Thanks for the advice.
