Need advice on wind flag height.

I have a 1000 yard home range and recently installed 3 flag poles at 250, 500, and 850 yards. The poles are 21 feet high. I'm using official NRA wind flags. Is there a specific height I should run these flags? My thought was to run them at the height of the bullets trajectory at each yardage to most accurately show what the wind condition is where the bullet is flying.

Thats what i would do. Who cares what the wind is doing at 20' when your bullet is 4 or 6' off the ground

Yes, which may require the full 21' somewhere at mid-range.

My thoughts exactly. The 250 and 850 might only be 5 to 10 feet high but at 500 it will probably be at 21 feet.

If your goal is to practice for NRA High Power competition; put them at the same height as Lodi. That will make your practice easily transferable.

Nowhere near. Maximum ordinate is at 567 yards and is 129.4" with Berger 155.5 Fullbore. At 800, with a 1000 yard zero, it is 96.4", around 8'.

If you change your zero to 800 yards, it will be 0" at 800. [br]
My previous example assumed 1000 yard zero and cited the parabola relative to line of sight.

Steve I was just funnin. I meant no matter what your zero was if you held for 1000 yards it would still be 8" high at 800.

Are there any programs that will show the flight path of a bullet relative to the ground? It's easy to calculate the amount of drop but it doesn't actually show me the exact flight path and how high above the ground the bullet is along the entire flight to 1000 yards.

Keep in mind that the regulation flags are 12 feet long so you need to be at least that high to not hit the ground. 20 foot is a decent height all across the range. At one of the ranges I shoot F-Class at they supplement the regulation flags with half size (or close to it) yellow flags set in between the regulation flags and at half the height. There have been times that it really helped during a match.

Thanks for the advice. After calculating the drop and the height of my bench and the target it appears that at 250, 500, and 800 yards, 10 to 13 feet is optimal. I will probably let the flag fly at 15 feet high on all 3 to keep it off of the ground. I may take your advice and place 3 smaller flags between the large ones. Has anyone left these flags out all the time? I'm curious how long they would last if I didn't take them down.

Here in western Nebraska they don't last long - but the darn wind blows all the time. I started the season last year with new flags and after 7 matches a couple of the ends have started to tatter a little. They are the nylon flags just like they use at Ben Avery. I bet you won't be happy leaving them up.

I think your setup is perfect,setting the height as ALF suggested. It might be interesting to set another flag at legal height alongside the tall one. I have a 100m home range and I am jealous of 1000m,the closest 1000 from CT is in Maine and I think it's private. Tom

IBS rules......

(1) Official wind flags shall be a minimum size, 1/5"x24", but wind flags of any size may be placed by competitors no higher than the line between the highest point of bench top to bottom of target card.

2) Except as provided for in 3) below, personal wind flags will be restricted to within the competitive shooting lane of the competitor placing the flags. A shooting lane is defined as the centerlines between benches to the centerline between the target cards unique to each competitor.

3) Competitors may place personal wind flags off to the side of the range; that is, left of the left most bench on the range, and/or right of the right most and right most bench being used on a given day at the affected tournament.
