Need advice on a case trimmer

I'm looking to buy a case trimmer and need some advice/guidance. I reload .223 Rem. So far this Redding trimmer seems to be what I'm leaning toward buying: Redding 2400 Match Precision Case Trimmer Accuracy and speed/convenience are the top priorities. The micrometer adjustment seems like it would really help to speed things up.

Any thoughts? Good choice? $125 is about my upper limit in terms of cost. Anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

P.S.: It looks like that Redding trimmer can only go up to .30 caliber. Is that common, or will most trimmers handle the larger diameter, pistol) cases like .45ACP?

In your price range, the Wilson is a good trimmer. I saved up the $$ and went with a Giraud. The cool thing is that I only have to use it every now and then cause I can run through 4-5,000 cases in a matter of a few hours and I dont have to touch the trimmer again for a good while! Well worth the $$.

Is this the Wilson trimmer you're referring to? The price is definitely agreeable. Any idea if it's better/worse than the Redding?

This is the Wilson with micrometer adjustment and stand. IMO the very best in a non-powered trimmer. Seperate case holders are required for each family of cartridges.

Try to go to a shop that stocks various types/models and trim an actual case at the store. If you are going to be doing bulk trimming, the time it takes to get one case ready/fixed in the trimmer may be of greater concern to you than other factors?

If you are only going to do 223, get the WFT. If you think you may do others, get the WFT-2. I hung mine off of an old Ryobi wood lathe variable speed motor that came to me free but a drill would work fine. They are easy to set up and very cost-effective. If the wallet is OK with it the Giraud will be a little quicker for sure.

Rick

I've got both the Redding and the Wilson. In my experience, the Redding is reasonably fast, but not terribly accurate -- a surprising amount of variation in the results. The Wilson is, after a bit of practice, about the same as the Redding in terms of speed, but very accurate, with very little variation in the results.

The Wilson offers other advantages as well; for example, once you've got the case in the case holder for trimming, it's quite convenient to leave it in there for other tasks, such as pocket uniforming, neck chamfer and debur, because now you've got something large to hang on to for those processes.

Go with the Forster. They have a good 3-way trimmer head for each caliber. Sure saves a lot of time and does a good job. Who trims 45 ACP?

yes but once you use a giraud you will wonder how you got along with out it.

100% this.

Also search information on making a custom chambered trim die for your caliber.
It makes for even faster trimming than the spring loaded factory die. Although
both will do the job equally well, the OEM benefits from a 1/4-1/2 turn on each case.
A custom chambered trim die is in-out, as fast as you can handle the cases.

Is there a manual trimmer where the case rotates against a stationary cutter.
My last trimmer with rotating cutter, cut the case edge at an angle, can't recall the make.

The Wilson/Sinclair model is great. The carbide trimmer add on makes it faster and consistent.
I've had mine about 6 years. If I didn't have so many cartridges, I'd have gone Giraud.
