Need Advice from you experienced BR guys

I am having my first BR rifle built soon in 6mm Dasher. My question is regarding fire forming brass, Since I dont have extremely deep pockets for two rifles I was thinking of having a Tikka .243 win that I have chambered with the same reamer as my BR rifle and use the Tikka for fire forming my brass for the BR rifle and varminting if it comes up. Does this seem like a good idea? or does anyone have a better idea so Im not throwing all those rounds down an expensive custom barrel while I already have one 6mm barrel that could take some of the work load.

Getting exactly the same headspace in both chambers is very unlikely which might cause chambering problems in one of the barrels after the case is fired in the other. The 6mm BR variants are so easy on barrels I don't see the point in cutting up a nice Tikka just to fireform a bunch of brass for your custom rifle. I bought Lapua brass for my recently finished 6mmBR & they are so good, the fit to my chamber was amazing. I don't think I needed to fireform them. You don't need super hot loads to fireform either, 5-10% down from published maximum will do nicely with no discernable wear on your new throat.

would it be that bad to have a dasher carry rifle too cuz I do coyote hunt too. Anyone else have any thoughts, any input is much appreciated thanks guys.

Just use your match barrel to fireform, you might be suprised at the accuracy. I have gotten .250 @ groups 100 yards give and take, while fireforming. I practice with fireforming loads.

I thought about chambering up a Tikka T-3 for 6 Dasher, then I realized the magazine won't feed right.

No it wuldnt be so terrible to have a Dasher for a hunting gun. Just "remind" your gunsmith of what you want,,,and what u want is the chamber of the "fireform" bbl. to be aprox .001" shorter on the headspace...,just a lil") dont try to have them the same...then when you put em in the target chamber they will work like a charm!!!....if you want to reload em for the original chamber then just remove .001" shim from the sizer die and the ctgs can be used in the original bbl with no problem either. ....Lots-0-floks do this for their fireform chamber for PPC's etc.....Roger

Thanks for the info Roger and Fly Buster, fly buster do you know why the mag wont feed rite ? I know the regular BR is .490 shorter in o.a.l. according to hornady book. I guess if worse comes to worse I have to single feed. thanks again guys.

Hi BK ....we all know u got the dicimal in the wrong place....but the Dasher is aprox. .020" shorter than the original 6mmNorma case dims....the most popular Dasher reamers cut a chamber around ~ 1.555 +/- a lil' ....you must be looking at a drawing of the original Remington BR,,,which was around 1.520 ...depending on what reamer that was used...Be shure and use a reamer that is designed to use the modern Lapua brand Norma 6mmBR case...which usually is around 1.555 from the box and will work in most chambers that are cut at 1.570"....which makes the trim length 1.560"!!!!.....hope this helps...Roger

My Tikka is a 22-250 right now. I take that back. The magazine is alittle difficult to load, but I played around with it today and it would actually feed fine.

I might do the same as you are suggesting.
Good luck with the project.

Thanks for the correction, it was the Remi BR that I was looking at, and the Tikka I have is a 243 win and it just seems like the thing to do to keep the good barrel shooting longer. I wish I had some Lapua 6mm cases to check it but its good to hear that it mite work. thanks alot for the advice guys its nice to know that you guys are so helpful to get a green horn on the rite track! thanks again.

If it is not too late, make it a straight 6BR and save yourself some $$ and hassle...

Just getting started in the game, the dasher may not worth the hassle for another 100fps...

YMMV,
JB

Thanks for the advice jb! I have been reloading for several calibers for a few years now and I really want to see how good I can get at long range shooting and test my reloading skills. Im also kinda a speed freak. I know accuracy is most important and it is to me too, but its fun to go fast! and I just want something a little different. I also like the fireforming and extra involvement. I was gonna A.I. my .243 or 22-250 but from everything I've read and learned here it seems like the Dasher is the way to go. But thanks again and thanks to all here for the info that is shared and so readily available to all.

I couldnt agree more, all the info i've read on it here suggests that it is the premeir cartridge out for 600 yds. and even holds it own at 1000. Im sure other people have different opinions but for my purposes I think it will be perfect. Here's an off the subject question, but do know where I can find a 600 to 1000 yard range or ranges in Wisconsin? Rite now the farthest I get to shoot is 300 yds.

I've read Lodi Wisconsin has a High Power range. Try out some F-Class.

Infact I think that's where Nationals will be held this year.
