Need Advice - 17HMR

I had a Savage 93 GV-- wood stock Bull barrel Blue-- It was OK--shot just under 3/4" @ 100-- Overall I like the 22mag much better. I like the bullet weights in the 22 mag better-- I looked at the 17's for a few years and when I pulled the trigger and broke down and bought one i was just not very happy with the gun. -- I expected it to be much better than the 22 Mag and it was not.. 17 is almost like shooting with a very fast pellet gun

I have a Old Marlin 782 and a Winchester 94-22 XTR both shoot sub 1" @ 100 with 40 gr Winchester ammo.

JMHO stay with the 22 Mag

Just bought an Annie pistol in 17hmr. 5, 10 shots, whatever, less than 1" at a hundred yards. 17 vmax & 2-8 leupold EER scope, champion rings clamped to the rail. I rest my case. :) .22 Rimfires? Traditionalists or cheapskates? :D

as for your question about a .17HMR for under $500, it is your choice , i have a marlin 917v and this thing shoots great. it really prefers the federal ammo with the black plastic tip, but since stinkin walmart can't seem to keep enough of that i had to use the CCI .17gr hp, they shoot OK but not like the federals.
as far as killing varmints and things i have really only shot turtles and the white birds that you will see around ponds, i think they are eegrits, not sure about the speeling but anyhow those things have an extremely tiny body, even with my cheap scope on this gun i still can hit them at well over 100yds. so if you want fun get the .17HMR if not go with the mag. jmo.

I occasionally shoot a long range silhouette match where the chickens are at 75 meters, pigs at 112, turkey at 144 and rams at 189 meters. If the wind is blowing very much the 17's score much better than the 22 lr. This is backwards from conventional wisdom but it's true.

I have a 17 cal bbl on my Annie 64 and at this time it's chambered in 17HM2. The HM2 does great until you get to the heavya$$ rams, then it just doesn't have enough retained energy to knock them down unless you hit them on the head. The HM2 ammo is much cheaper and I think it would do fine on small game out to 100 yards. I have a 17 HMR reamer on hand and as soon as I use up the last of my HM2 ammo I am going to ream the bbl to use the HMR.

I have one also and it also keeps under inch at 100yds i have a 6x24 and a bipod what a shooter

The Savage rifles are hard to beat in the price range you are looking at.
More and more accessories are becoming available and there are more than a few things you can do without breaking the bank to improve the accuracy.
The Accu trigger is lighter and much better than most all stock triggers in he lower price range also.

If you stick to the lowest price with the bull barrel and wood stock, you can have money left for a scope also.

I bought a Savage with a heavy bbl and lam stock w/accu trgr. Put a Leu 12X on it. Groups the Hornady ammo best. Just a cheap rifle, but shoots very well. Can snap twigs at 75 yards. Bad thing is ammo cost. Best price is $10/50. More costly than common 22LR, but will do a lot more out to a couple hundred yds.

Price range? Savage,H&R, Marlin.. I checked on the 93R17 SS recently after buying one from a guy I work with for $100... ???? Booked $239 new,, It didn't shoot for him.. wasn't gonna pass it up.. Took it home and cleaned it good.. I can spell tack driver... He'd bought it used(Probably same reason he sold),, It was DIRTY... I put one of the Cabelas Pine Ridge Multi Turret 3X9's on it.. Great Combo.. Wind,, yeah,, big issue.. if you shoot in an area where you'll return, take the time to walk out and put up a ribbon on a stick before you leave.. the doggies will be used to it by the time you return, and you'll know what's happening downrange.. Early Morning is key where I live..
Happy Shootin!!!

+1 on the Ruger 77/17, but it will bust your budget. You will be looking at about $800 by the time you get a trigger job and put a scope on it. I really like the Ruger rotary magazines, and took my first PD with it Saturday at about 130 yards. DOA.

Sounds like lots of folks are happy with the Savage and also the CZ. If I had the money, I would put it into the Anschutz, but that is not for everyone or every budget.

I have had the best luck with the Hornady ammo, buy several types and find which one your new toy likes the best. I think the .17 HMR is here to stay, even if it is a very light bullet and just can not buck the wind well.

The only real problem with the Ruger is that if you make any mods, Ruger will put it back to stock and keep your parts.

I had a couple real issues with a Couple Rugers and will never buy another, but that's just me.

I have found them in many, but not all cases Rugers do not have the accuracy of the average Savage, and again, my opinion from both brands I've seen. They do have a nice fit and finish, I just don't care for their policys and iffy accuracy.

My Best, John

Been there done that. Sold it all and infused the money for my 22 Mags. Much happier ;D ;D ;D. As a side note, when 17HMR ammo was $12-13 a box 22 Mag was still $6-8 a box . Now my own paranoid theory is that 22Mag ammo has gone up to NEARLY the price of 17HMR ammo to HELP prevent MASS EXODUS of 17HMR owners to the BETTER cartridge (the 22 mag) as prices are now about the same. So save youreself a trip to the Couch DR and get the 22MAG ;) The rifles I had were a Ruger 9617 and an Annie.

AMEN, I have a Savage 17 and it drives tacks when there is NO wind...think I paid $230 and it came with a lousy simmons scope. But for $12-$16 per 50, I'd rather be shooting a 22 mag that's not a lot slower and drives twice as much bullet.

My Savage BSEV is really good but the Ruger 17/77 is nicer both shoot great. My only complaint about the Savage is how cheep the magazine release is made. Like they made it from a soda can. PG

Have CZ MII..Check the trajectory table... both are close out to 125 yds..Ammo is cheaper with CCI having a big edge on both group and power in the MII..The MII is lacking in a bullet that will expand...Shot mine as backup on p-dog hunts..Sure killer but no reaction from the target...Very good if you are saving hides.LT
