Need a custom FL die - Who?

Keith Glasscock

I'm wanting to go to a one-piece FL die for my 284. I finally have my loading down to the point where I can kick the bushings to the curb (hate the darn things).

Who does really good custom work?
How do I contact them?

What kind of lead time should I expect?

Thanks,
Keith

Personally, I'm considering doing the same and I've boiled the list of consideration down to two names....either
Harrell or Whidden. I have friends who are serious shooters and competitors and have used both. I'm leaning toward John Whidden at this point because of not only his reputation, but because of the results those folks have had using Whidden products. Now that's not to say Harrell doesn't produce a fine product. But knowing what I know and have seen, John Whidden holds the edge with me.

I was very pleased with Jim Carstensen's work. His process is you send him a Redding body die and a couple of fired cases. He sends you back a custom die that matches your chamber. The re-worked custom die is machined for a neck bushing and includes a decapping pin w/neck sizing button.

I have had dies made from "reamer specs" , personally I now prefer to send in fired cases if I can.. sometimes things change from reamer print to finished product.

The Redding FL sizing die (non Bushing type) with a .309" neck ID works fine for me. I think they are about $68.50 and part number 91141.

Sorry computer stupid!I don't like the bushing dies either.Once I figure out what neck diameter I want I call Forster. They will hone it out to what ever you want for 10 to 20 bucks, and those dies are straight!

Why do you want to get rid of the bushings? They are nice for tuning.

They are fine when I only have a little neck clearance. When I have the amount my 284 runs, keeping the runout down becomes a chore.

At the same time, I haven't seen any difference in groups between .002 and .003 neck tension.

If you had a Shehane I could help you out.

Contact Neil Jones, he will be making my dies when my reamer comes in.

if you want the best i highly recommend Whidden Gunworks. Send them fired cases or a reamer print and they will produce a top quality die or die set for you. I have multiple sets of their dies and have been very happy with them. Typical turnaround time for a full custom die set is 6-8 weeks last time i checked. http://www.whiddengunworks.com/

Warner Custom FL Dies ! Al & Dan knocked one up for me for my .308 Palma rifle + a matched reamer , straight cases plus infinite headspace control with the add in shims , a veritable work of art the Warner Die.
The neck insert is ground and polished off fired cases as is the case body die insert, and annealing necks is recommended with the Warner FL Die.
And the best part , one only need a new set of die inserts to change cartridges.

regards
Mike.
