Need a bit of advice for Stock Savage 12 BR in 6 BR Norma

I'm working on a load for my Bone Stock Savage 12 BR in 6 BR Norma.

It has 1-8 Twist and I'm starting off with Sierra 107 gr BTHP (factory tipped) over Varget. I found a decent node at 30.3 gr with Avg 2899 FPS, and ES -18.81 STD Dev -7 and they grouped decent (to me any way.

These were shot with a .010 Jam, but I have some primers flaring up around firing pin. I have since, had the bolt/firing pin bushed, but haven't shot it since doing this.

My main question is what jump are you guys/gals finding that work best with the Sierra 107gr ?

Are you finding they shoot better with a jump, or jammed? Details, on jump or jam, will be extremely helpful.

30.3 is pretty hot IMLE ..

I run a seating test to determine what I consider the optimum depth for my 107 smk setup, .016 jump seems to shoot smallest. Yours may vary a bit.

I have had the smk 107 like jam in some barrels and jump in others. Testing your barrel is really the only way to find out, it will tell you what it likes. Hope it shoots for ya.

Try slowing down. That load would shoot in my old Savage but 29.5 is where it really shot well.

With a stock Savage I always start at 0.018 off the lands and I very seldom have moved in, usually out a couple thousands. Also drop the load to mid 29's, you will only loose a few fps and you will probably have little to no vertical. You should also stop the primer problem.

Try the 107 SMK at 0.010" jump. 30.0g Varget, CCI BR4 primer. This is what I ran in my Savage factory barrel and it worked great. Slight difference though... I used moly 107s.

Have a friend with same rifle shooting 107 Sierra with 29.8 Varget, jumping .040. Did not shot good till he hit .035 jump but .040 is better. Now shooting 5 shot groups in the .2s.

Thanks everyone. I'll try backing off the powder load to see if I can find a node. I'll bring my loading stuff setup in my buddies reloading trailer, and experiment with your suggested jumps, to see if it will find a load/jump it likes.

Jim, I use 107 SMK in a pair of 6 BRXs. I most often shoot in the rifleing. But, that is not always the answer. Lets start by forgetting the word jamb. Let's think touch. I have a friend who has the same model rifle as you. He is using Varget 29.8, 107 SMK jumping. 040 to touch. Shoots in the .2s and 3s. Conversely, I have had lots of barrels that shot very close to a square mark from the lands engraved on the bullet, will require some neck tension. You can find this all out by first getting close to the answer with 2 shot groups Get 2 in a hole either shot a 3rd to confirm or shoot another 2 shot group see if it repeats. This will save on barrel and bullets. If the first 2 shots are not good a third will not tighten the group. Don't limit yourself with perconcieved ideas. Good luck, keep us posted.

Jeff, Thank you for your help. I'm heading to the range in the morning. I loaded up 3 rounds each, starting at 29.7, then 29.9, 30.1 and 30.3 (I'll be watching for pressure signs with the last 2 loads). I loaded the first set (4 different loads) with .010 off (measured from touch) and the second set at .015 off. I will also have the necessary tools to load at the range, if I have enough time, and don't get satisfactory results from the loadings above.

I also loaded a 2 shot set at 29.8 and 30 seated to touch. I'll try your suggestion of 2 shots and see if they work.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I have to get this rig shooting at least as good as my 50 BMG can shoot, and that's a TALL order, but lots cheaper per round..lol

I've had two Kriegers and one Bartlein 6 BR's and both worked best with .010 / .015 " off the lands using the 107's and 70 SMK's, the VLD is better jammed in my experience but like ttfreestyle says.....that's the way to go.
