Need 4831 range powders?

http://www.gibrass.com/gunpowder.html

IMR7383
This is a slow burning stick powder originally used for the Cal. .50
M48A2 Spotter/Tracer round. This is not the same case as that known as
the .50 Browning Machine Gun cartridge. This powder is NOT recommended
for the .50 BMG round. It is a very bulky, single-based powder, composed
of 85% nitrocellulose and 15% stabilizers, flash inhibitors and graphite;
that was developed to replace the IMR4831 powder that was being used.
It has about the same propellant energy as IMR4831 when compared in equal volume. IMR4831 data can be used. Begin with starting loads, reduced 15% by weight.

This is new powder, not pulldown.
$56/7# jug.

I have some of this but have not experimented with it yet. Did some research before buying and found very little USEFUL info - lots of hype, warnings, and propaganda.

Somewhere out there is a miltary manual listing all the powders, mfg's, and uses. There are also a couple "burn rate" charts listing IMR 7383 to give you a very rough idea.

If you want to read long, drawn out arguments about this powder on the internet, Google IMR 7383. Many internet posts claim this is a Triple based powder, not single as listed above, but that is internet rumor.

I saw that powder for sale and Googled it, and from what I can piece together, it has a VERY narrow usable range between being filthy (for undercharges) and scary (for overcharges).

Apparently, once it reaches a certain pressure, the pressure and velocity spike THROUGH THE ROOF in the kinds of cartridges most of us shoot. If you go a hair below the "sweet spot" on powder charge, it's real dirty/sooty ... and if you go a hair above the sweet spot, suddenly you're getting blanked primers if not worse.

Look before you leap and if you're like me, you'll decide that powder is way too pressure-spikey to be worth the cost differential.

You mean its like some other retail powders? No pressure signs then POOF?

Don't want or need? No use? Don't buy.

Not sure any info from the battery recycler crowd (cast bullets) applies.

WC857-WC872 BMG big magnum type stuff out there. Might work for some who need volume shooting on a budget.

I have been buying powder from jeff for years and if he says it will work,it will.
