You overlooked the "m", he wanted 3 or 4 thousand.

m does not mean 1000. m means milli. Like 35mA. M means Meg or 1 million. The only time M means 1000 is when money is referenced.

Except 3 or 4 milli pieces of brass wouldn’t be of much use.

M in Roman Numerals is 1000, did he mean to use lower case or just did it? No idea, I'm pretty sure he wasn't talking about 38 milliamps of anything and I'm also pretty sure he wasn't talking about money so I'm going with he wanted 3 or 4 thousand. You go with whatever your heart tells you.
