Need 30 br reamer

What do you call that Bulgarian wrestler of a cartridge, Al?-

We called it the 30 WolfPup. At the time, the minimum case capacity for HBR was 45.0 of water. We had been shortening the 308W cases to get there....this was before the introduction of the Lapua 6.5X47 case. On vacation with our wives, Stan Ware and I started pondering how much we'd have to blow a 30BR case forward to get to 45.0 gr. capacity. We returned home with some sketches on napkins (I'm not kidding ;) ). Stan repeatedly ran his 30BR reamer into an old Lilja barrel of mine until the fired case held 45.0 and the WolfPup was born. There's a lot more to the story but that's the crux of it. We both shot it with success for several seasons. In fact, Stan shot it exclusively in both his HBR and VFS gun until he retired from competitive BR shooting.

When the rules changed and eliminated the case capacity rule in HBR, the 30BR became a simpler route to go in a HBR gun.

When I sent Randy Robinett a picture of the fired case and laid out our plan, he responded with the simple phrase: "It'll never work!" If you know Randy, you'll understand that's a ringing endorsement! :D

Good stuff!-Al

Great story! Puts paid to any notion that a substantial neck is required for accuracy (there are other considerations for a hunting cartridge.) I'd like to know the backstory some day on neck turning before fireforming, although I have a hunch why.

I made the turned portion of the neck .175 long. When fireformed, the lower portion of the turned area became the the neck/shoulder junction as well as the upper .035-ish of the actual shoulder. With the base of the bullet about .050 below the neck/shoulder junction, it was critical that donuts not be allowed to form.

Making the lower part of the turned neck into the upper part of the actual shoulder prevented that. -Al
