necking pistol brass

Has anyone necked pistol brass to say, resemble a mini rifle cartridge? I was thinking of necking .44 mag cases to accept 6mm bullets. Anyone try this or know if it has been done.

The 357 Sig is 40 S&W necked to 9MM. 357/44 Bain and Davis has been around for a while. Revolvers sometimes set back as the shoulder pushes back and ties up the cylinder. If you kept the pressure low it might work, but there's plenty of low pressure pistols already. A 6MM/44 Ruger carbine might work.

Call Gary Reeder @ Reeder Custom Guns.
He has been doing this for many, many years, and is quite good at it. I have the 41GNR #2 which is the 445 Super Mag case necked down to 41 cal.

Howdy !

Yeah.... there have been some wildcats off handgun brass; over the years.

That I have read about:
- .357Mag necked-own to .223" cal = " 22 Jet "
- .38-40 has been taken down to 6mm.
- .357Max necked-down to .224" cal ( uses a .222 Rem die,
that has a couple thou' taken off the bottom )
.... to name a few

As regards use of .44 Mag brass.....
I believe redux to 6mm has already been tried. I'll have to see if I can find the name of that one

Are you interested in use of .44Mag brass, because you have a "rimmed" cartridge application
in-mind ?

I ask , because .35 Rem brass has about the same "base" diameter a .44Mag.
If you could use a "rimless" type case, .35 Rem brass can be massaged to obtain a new 6mm wildcat that exactly fits the void between 6PPC and 6 BR.

I DK what cased size/ capacity you actually have in mind. If you think a .44Mag- based wildcat would work for your needs, the rimless alternative I mentioned above; might work also ?

As an aside: 7 X 33 Sako is basically formed off of super-long 9mm brass.
Sako drew the brass out as-far-as they could w/ their existing equipment; and the result is the 33mm long 7 X 33 case.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

With regards,
357Mag

Thanks 357mag! I got the idea from the jet. I have alot of extra .44 mag brass and have a few handguns and lever guns chambered in it. I also love 6mm stuff, particulary my 243. I thought it would be fun to combine the two. The wildcat is more of a fun see if it works idea rather than a practical one. I made a set of dies today and sent them down to heat treat. I should have them back thursday and can start grinding them friday. I made a set of soft dies and they worked ok, i dont think they were hard enough and polished enough. I only got a few ok looking rounds, the rest crimpled and crushed or split. The ground finish should take care of that. Ill post the pics soon.

Howdy back 'atcha !

The .22Jet experience has me wondering about " headspace ", and cartidge set-back; et al....

With your revolver application, they'll be a propensity for the cartidge to move aft; for any of a variety of reasons.

6mm ( example ) bullet selection for use w/ notional necked-down .44Mag brass, would need to be a well thought-out choice(s), as the bullet' tips cannot exetend beyond the front face of the cylinder.

In a lever gun application, you'll have the closed & locked bolt there to hold the cartridge in the chambered position.

Yeah.... wildcats are fun !
I had earlier this year, I had necked down some .357Mag brass to .32calibre.
I also fore-shortened some .35 Rem ( as mentioned before ), and necked it down to .357" cal.
The latter wildcat, came in w/ a bit less case capacity than a .357 AutoMag.
( Aside: I form .357AutoMag brass from either 6BR or 7BR brass ).

What will you be shooting ( targets, varmints ) ?

With regards,
357Mag

Id most likely shoot just target with it. Varmint will fall to it when its perfected, but i prefer my .243 for that. I wouldnt try to chamber it into a revolver, this will be a lever or bolt gun. Im starting my search for a used .44mag long gun now. The dies should be back from heat treat this afternoon. Hopefully i can get to bore grinding them this afternoon.

The guys over on saubier.com do a lot of necking pistol brass down to smaller calibers for rifles. Might post your questions over there. Chances are someone else has already done what you're asking about and can give some pointers. Vic

Thats a pretty good site. Thank you for that. I couldnt find any .44mag necking to the point i wanted to, but it was really informative. I should have a few trials tomorrow afternoon.

I have a CZ52 pistol in 7.62X25. It is a necked 30 cal round. the bullet is ~86gr and Mv of 1500fps or so. It's one of the few pistol rounds that can pierce soft body armor.
This pistol/round is very accurate for military issue gun and ammo. It is the same round used in the Russian sub-machine gun of WW II fame that was also very accurate. I'll bet one could neck it down to 6mm and fire varmint bullets!

I think Prvi Partizan makes cases for it with "our" kind of primers.

9x25 Dillon. It's a 10mm necked down to 9mm, 2000fps out of a 6 inch barrel with a 90gr bullet. It's insanity, but they pull it off.
