Ackley Improved cases are "Improved" cases rather than "Wildcat" cases. the difference being Improved cases are formed by firing a factory cartridge in the improved chamber- the case fills out from the pressure, forming to the new shape. the 300 Weatherby is basically a 300 H&H Weatherby Improved. The 300 H&H chamber is reamed out to Weatherby specs, then an H&H cartridge is fired in it, and the shooter now has a 300 Weatherby case. Wildcatting involved modifying a case prior to fitting it in a chamber. The various neck up/down cartridges of the 250, 7x57, 308, 30-06 families would be considered wildcats prior to adoption as factory cartridges.
