necking down a 30-378 weatherby to a 7mm

hey guys what do you think about necking down a 30-378 to a 7mm bullet.and even giveing it an Ackley shoulder.do you think it would be worth a try or not.would love to hear your opinions.John

It would definetly be a scorcher. I would look towards the 338 lapua for better brass. There is a smith in Montana named Kirby Allen. He has developed a line of cartridges with 338 lapua brass. I believe he has necked down to 7mm and 30 cal. I can only get about three or four shots out of my 30-378 brass before the primer pockets are loose. Food for thought.

Not sure if you would gain anything over the 7mm Rem Ultra Mag. The 300 Ultra and 30-378 Wby run pretty close in performance.

thanks guys.just want to see if it was doable.or if it would be a good idea.really like the BC of a 7mm.and think it would blow up a 6mm bullet.just looking into a project rifel.and I have always wanted to make my own case and cal.but thanks again,John

I shot a 7-300 Weatherby a few years back and relative to the time period it was an 11 inch gun at 1000 yards. I enjoyed success with a 30-338 Lapua case shortened to 2.350". The case capacity was betweeen a 300 Win MAg and a 300 Weatherby. Then I had a chamber reamer made with the same case dimension but in a 7mm. I am still struggling with it to get it to shoot well. My advice is not to waste your time unless you are willing to expect lackluster results.
