Neck up question. 6.5 to 30cal.

I will soon be doing a 30 Major. Question is, to go from 6.5 Grendel brass to .30 cal. Pma has a 6 to 30 neck up mandrel. 21 century has a 6 to 7mm, 7 to 30 cal. So it would require 2 steps. Is that to relax the brass some how so the necks don’t split or is it ok to do it one step which I prefer.

Depends whose turning arbor you'll be using.
The PMA expander that goes all the way to 30 is optimized for this one step process and is a mated pair with their turning arbor.

That being said, I get more consistent results when necking up in multiple steps... but I'm no pro.

Even though you can use one mandrel to go from 6mm to .30 caliber, I do not recommend it due to the shoulders tend to warp due to all the down pressure and the necks will not be concentric to the body. If you decide to do so, after necking up, you may want to full length resize the now formed 30BR and run the correct expanding sizing mandrel back through that matches your neck turner for proper clearance prior to turning necks for consistent run out and chamber clearance.

How many steps do you recommend ? And whos expanders do you use? also what lube do you use for this?

Im currently using a PMA 6-30 but had to run everything through a sizing die afterwards . thinking about adding a step or 2.

I use Hornady elliptical expanders starting with .257,.264,.284 and .30. Then I use a 30 cal expanding mandrel that matches up with the neck turner I plan on using. I use Hornady One Shot case lube for expanding.

Im assuming these can only be used in a Hornady die? Which die are you using them in?

I recently did 100 new Starline from 6.5 grendel to 30 Major, lost 1 I think. One step with a steel Sinclair expander, I used Imperial for lube.
