Neck Turning

Ok,
I know this has been bashed to death so all I would like to know is what is the preferd method using a cutting turning mandrel or non cutting and the reason why if yous dont mind.

Cheers Trev.

Yes to remove internal donut if the shoulder brass is thicker and flows into base of case neck

From the beginning. If you have a factory chamber there will be no need to turn new brass. With tight neck chambers I outside turn new brass. With the rounds that cause a brass flow that forms a doughnut at base of the neck you must inside neck turn to remove the doughnut or you pressure with go throughout the roof.

It is a no turn chamber just skimming necks just seeing how these cases shoot.
I have had great sucsess just sizing with a expander mandrel before filling cases and seating turned some today I dont know how guys get smack on measurements I was aiming for 14thou best I could get was 13.9 to 14.3 range they did very unturned from 16 to 14.2 thou.
I have ordered carbide inside neck reamers for calibers I shoot just in case needed.

Why carbide? Brass is soft and carbide likes speed when cutting.

If your cases show that much variance, I would suspect poor expander/turner mandrel sizing fit. The case should not be loose on the turning mandrel. OR....... If you are only skimming, could the variance be where the necks didn't get touched? You usually have to turn the entire neck before you see numbers matching up closely all the way around..............

Trev,
I like a carbide mandrel and carbide neck bushings, but I don't care for them on my neck turners.
To each his own, you need to use what makes you feel gooey inside.

I have 21st century mandrels and sinclair mandrels I tested both for fit the 21st century expander was a looser fit than the sinclair the sinclair was snug I used lube and no heat at all in case nk or turning mandrel was not turning fast was in no rush.

If you are using a donut cutter mandrill you have to be really really careful not to score the inside of the neck
Have not yet but the ones I have ordered are As It seems they have cutting face at the end of the reamer.
I think I shall order some Forster reamers aswell that way if I need to I have them.
