Neck Turning?

Im looking for some information on the gracey power outside neck shaver? Are they consistant and worth the money. Thanks in advance

The one guy that I know of that had one sold it. Everyone that I know does one of three things: 1. Turns them on a lathe, 2. Uses a K&M turner or, 3. Uses a Nielson Pumpkin.

I prefer the Pumpkin with a carbide mandrel, but it's pricey. I expand on a Nielson expanding mandrel, chuck the case in a K&M case holder and use a variable speed drill motor (as slow as it will go) to turn the cases.

I've tried a variety of things for lube. They all have their upsides and downsides.

The secret sauce is:
1. Going slow!
2. Doing a coarse cut and then a fine cut
3. Keeping the turner in a bucket of ice water between cases.

Set the coarse cut with a feeler gauge. Just get within a thou or so.

The folks that sell prepared cases are using lathes. You can pick up a used mini-lathe for a reasonable price. There is a good article on how to use it to turn necks. I think it was in Precision Shooting. There is a similar article in the Benchrest.com blogs..again, I think that's where it is.

The guy that had the gracey say why he didnt like it or as to why he sold it? I have turned a pile of brass on our lathe. I do it for my dad and uncle, now its time for them to join in on the fun.

I asked the guy what he was doing for neck turning and he said he "was going back to my K&Ms". I didn't ask anything further.

If you've got a lathe set up where you expand on a spud then run a cutting tool over it, you've already got the best solution.
