neck turning

Does anyone know why neck turning in done pre full length
resizing instead of after sizing? and what would be the
result if necks are turned after sizing.
thanks

Sandy, You should run the brass necks over an expander prior to turning to even out all the high and low spots on the perimeter of the necks. If you size first, then you may not be able to run your brass onto the turning mandrel or at best it would be too tight. In most all cases that I have tried this has been my findings. I hope this helps. Bill

The two books were Prone and Long Range Rifle Shooting by
Nancy Tompkins...the other book was >>Rifle Accuracy? by Arnold.
I'm sure both state neck turning first, then full length resizing.
thanks for the info

Sandy, You need to at least run an expander into the necks and most of the time as gunamonth said the OAL of the virgin brass will need at least a slight clean up in order to get consistancy from turning. Read those sections over again and make sure you read it right. Just trying to help. Bill

I don't neck turn, but got curious. Zediker corroborates what Bill and Gunamonth have told you: size, trim, then turn. The brass is sized first so that it will be expanded to fit the turning mandrel while moving the imperfections to the external surface.
