Neck turning neck sized brass

I have 100 6.5x284 once fired brass that I would like to uniform the necks on. I have heard that neck turning a neck sized case will ruin it since it only sizes part of the neck. Are there any remedies to this other than buying an extra full length sizing die to shape the entire neck and shoulder for turning?

The Forster Bench Rest Full Length Sizer Die offers maximum flexibility. It will return brass to factory new specifications. But, if you're loading for the same firearm, the full length sizing die may be "backed off' to partially resize and retain the fire formed dimensions of the case. All Forster Sizer Dies are equipped with the exclusive E-Z Out Expander. The floating E-Z Out Expander corrects misalignment of the center spindle assembly and prevents the case neck from pulling off-center during the expanding procedure.

You need to run the matched expander thru it anyway before you turn em so dont even worry about sizing them beforehand.

No, I don't. I just full length resize my brass with a Forster full length resizing die and then neck turn it. Regards JCS

Here is my take on it.

Once the cases are fired the neck is expanded beyond the proper turning diameter so you have to reduce the diameter by full length sizing. Then you would use the proper neck turning expander to achieve the right diameter to fit your turning mandrel.

There are several caveats to this process. If you get lucky your factory expander button will leave the inside diameter small enough that your neck turning expander still has to expand your inside diameter - this will set the proper turning diameter. If the FL die expander leaves the inside diameter too loose you will will have to change tactics.

If the inside is too loose you will have to decap the cases with a decapping die and then FL resize using the FL die without the guts in it and then use your neck turning expander.

So you will need at least a full length die and you may also need a decapping die. The good news is that both will be useful in the future.

The best way to avoid this of course is to turn before firing but I know that often is not possible due to circumstances.
